Health Services Stalled at Mayaganj Hospital: Testing Services Halted Since March 10; Administrative Silence Angers Patients

Bhagalpur: The medical services at the district’s largest healthcare center, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (Mayaganj Hospital), have crumbled once again. Pathological testing services in the hospital have been disrupted for several days, causing immense hardship to patients. Despite the suspension of testing services since March 10, the lack of any concrete action from the hospital administration and the district health department has raised serious questions about the state of affairs.

Negligence of a Private Agency or Administrative Failure?

The responsibility for diagnostic testing in the hospital has been outsourced to a private agency. According to sources, services have been disrupted due to a dispute between the agency and the administration regarding payments or the renewal of the contract. The situation is so dire that hundreds of patients visiting the Outpatient Department (OPD) and the Emergency ward are being forced to go to private laboratories outside the hospital for blood, urine, and other essential tests.

Poor patients, who come to the government hospital with the hope of receiving tests for free or at subsidized rates, are now being compelled to pay exorbitant fees at private centers.

The Administration Remains a Silent Spectator

The most concerning aspect of this entire matter is the attitude of the hospital administration. Despite diagnostic work being stalled for several days, the hospital management has neither attempted to resolve the issue through dialogue with the agency nor has it fully activated the hospital’s own in-house laboratory as an alternative.

The general public has leveled several allegations:

Giving a Free Hand to the Private Agency: Instead of taking strict action against the private agency, the administration remains a silent spectator.

Exploitation of Patients: With testing facilities halted, patients are being forced to pay high costs at private clinics.

Lack of Accountability: The silence of senior hospital officials on this serious crisis highlights their apathy toward the suffering of the common man.

The Plight of Patients and the Anger of Families

The anger of patients' families is clearly visible in the corridors of the hospital. Many people coming from remote villages do not have the money to afford expensive tests. For critical patients arriving in the emergency ward, this situation is proving to be life-threatening. Doctors are unable to start treatment without test reports, which is delaying timely medical intervention.

Administrative Assurances vs. Ground Reality

When attempts were made to contact senior hospital officials regarding this matter, they provided the typical response that the "issue will be resolved soon." However, the situation on the ground remains unchanged. The administration claims that the matter is related to payments and the process is underway, but poor patients are paying the price for this bureaucratic delay with their limited savings and their health.

The suspension of diagnostic services at Mayaganj Hospital is proof of the flawed functioning of the health department. If strict action is not taken against the private agency or if an alternative arrangement is not put in place immediately, it will severely impact the quality of care for patients. It remains to be seen whether the district administration will take concrete steps or if patients will continue to be left to fend for themselves.
