Bhagalpur: Echoes of 'Ya Hussain' at Imambaras on the 9th of Muharram; A Day of Mourning and Majlis
Bhagalpur: The month of Muharram is being observed with deep reverence and sorrow in memory of Hazrat Imam Hussain and the martyrs of Karbala. On Thursday, marking the 9th of Muharram, the tradition of mourning and Majlis (religious gatherings) continued across various Imambaras in Bhagalpur city. Members of the Shia community paid tribute to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, honoring the supreme sacrifice made at Karbala.
Majlis and Nauha-Khwani at Imambaras
Special Majlis were organized in Imambaras located in various neighborhoods of the city. While addressing the gatherings, clerics (Maulanas) shed light on the significance of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, his family, and his 72 companions. They emphasized that the martyrdom of Imam Hussain conveys a message of truth, justice, and the courage to fight against oppression for all of humanity.
Following the Majlis, mourners performed Nauha-Khwani (reciting elegies) and Sina-zani (chest-beating) to express their grief. Throughout this, the atmosphere in the Imambaras remained somber, filled with chants of "Ya Hussain" and "Ya Ali." Devotees, carrying Alams (standards), reflected on the tragic events of Karbala—an incident that provided the world with its greatest lesson in humanity and righteousness.
Strict Security Arrangements
To ensure peace and order during Muharram, the district administration remained fully vigilant. Heavy police forces were deployed in sensitive areas of the city. Officials personally inspected various routes to ensure that the processions and Majlis were conducted peacefully. The district administration has appealed to the public to celebrate the occasion with mutual brotherhood and harmony.
An Example of Discipline
A profound sense of discipline and devotion was visible among the devotees participating in the observances. The traditional Alam processions organized by the Shia community passed through designated routes in the city. Participants noted that Muharram is not merely a time of mourning; it is also a symbol of standing up against injustice and protecting humanity.
Social Harmony and Brotherhood
During these events, clerics and community leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and social harmony. They stated that the message behind Imam Hussain's sacrifice transcends religious boundaries, showing the path of peace to the entire world. In Bhagalpur, the spirit of brotherhood between the Hindu and Muslim communities during these days of Muharram serves as a perfect example of the city’s composite culture (Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb).
The distribution of Niyaz-Fatiha (offerings) continued in the Imambaras until late Thursday evening. Now, all eyes are set on Friday, the 10th of Muharram (Youm-e-Ashura), when special rituals and processions will be held to commemorate the martyrs of Karbala.
