Bhagalpur: A heart-wrenching road accident occurred late Tuesday evening on NH-80, under the jurisdiction of the Zero Mile police station. A middle-aged woman, who was returning home from a local tea shop, died on the spot after being struck by an unidentified vehicle. The deceased has been identified as Gaya Devi (55), a local resident. The tragic incident has left the entire locality in mourning.
Sequence of Events
According to eyewitnesses, Gaya Devi was returning to her home from a nearby tea stall as part of her daily routine. As she attempted to cross the main road near Zero Mile, she was struck with immense force by an unknown vehicle speeding from the direction of Bhagalpur. The impact was so severe that she was thrown onto the road and succumbed to her injuries instantly.
Bystanders rushed to help, but it was already too late. The driver managed to flee the scene with the vehicle immediately after the incident.
Protest by Angry Residents
Upon receiving news of the tragedy, a large number of local residents and family members gathered on the road. The irate villagers blocked the main Zero Mile road, demanding compensation and better road safety measures. The protesters stated that accidents have become a common occurrence near Zero Mile due to speeding vehicles, yet the administration has failed to enforce speed limits or deploy adequate traffic police personnel.
Upon receiving information about the road blockade, the Zero Mile Station House Officer (SHO) arrived at the scene with a police force. The police managed to clear the blockade after pacifying the crowd and assuring them of appropriate legal action.
Police Action
The Zero Mile SHO stated that the body has been taken into custody and sent to Mayaganj Hospital in Bhagalpur for a post-mortem examination. The police have begun scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed near the incident site to identify the offending vehicle. According to the police, preliminary investigations suggest that the unknown vehicle was traveling at a high speed. The police are currently awaiting a formal written complaint from the victim's family to proceed with the legal process.
Questions Raised Over Road Safety
This incident has once again raised concerns regarding the increasing number of road accidents in the busiest parts of the city. Local residents allege that the reckless movement of heavy vehicles on NH-80 has become a daily occurrence, and there is no safe path for pedestrians in the area. Residents have demanded that the district administration install speed breakers and increase police patrolling to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The family of the deceased is inconsolable. Gaya Devi was the backbone of her family, and her untimely death has pushed the household into a deep crisis.
