The Case of Former Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar’s Alleged 'Fake Degree' Hearings Resume in Saket Court
Bhagalpur: The high-profile case involving the alleged fake LLB degree of former Delhi Law Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Jitender Singh Tomar, purportedly issued by the Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU), is back in the headlines. In this case, which has been ongoing for nearly a decade, the process of recording testimony and verifying documents has gained momentum at the Saket Court in Delhi.
What is the Controversy?
The matter came to light in 2015 when allegations surfaced that Jitender Singh Tomar had used forged documents to obtain his LLB degree. Tomar had claimed that he earned his law degree in 1999 from the Vishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Studies in Munger, which was affiliated with TMBU at the time. However, subsequent investigations revealed that the educational certificates he submitted—which included documents linked to Faizabad and Bundelkhand University—were fraudulent.
Recent Developments at Saket Court
The trial is currently underway in Delhi's Saket Court. Recently, on June 30, 2026, Dr. Manindra Kumar Singh, the former College Inspector of TMBU, was summoned to testify in the case. The court directed him to verify the documents that the Delhi Police had seized from TMBU during their investigation.
Dr. Singh informed the court that due to the high volume of documents, it was practically difficult to accurately verify all of them within such a short timeframe. Taking cognizance of this, the court granted him additional time and scheduled the next hearing for July 3, 2026. Representatives from various universities, along with Tomar’s defense counsel, were present during the proceedings.
History of TMBU's Action
Regarding this matter, the TMBU administration had taken stringent steps in previous years:
Degree Cancellation: In 2017, following approval from the University’s Syndicate, Senate, and Examination Board, the university officially cancelled Jitender Singh Tomar’s LLB degree.
FIR Filed: The university paved the way for action against 14 of its own employees and officials found involved in the fraud and registered an FIR against Tomar.
Scope of Investigation: The university's investigation found that Tomar’s enrollment process and examination-related documents were highly suspicious and entirely illegitimate.
Political and Legal Impact
The political ramifications of this case have been significant. Following his arrest in 2015, Tomar was forced to resign from his position as Law Minister. Furthermore, in 2020, the Delhi High Court declared his 2015 election void due to the submission of incorrect information regarding his educational qualifications in his election affidavit.
Currently, the court's focus is on determining whether the documents seized by the Delhi Police are entirely authentic. This case is not only tied to the credibility of a former minister but also raises serious questions about the administrative system at TMBU, from where a racket involving the issuance of fake degrees was allegedly operated. All eyes are now on the hearing scheduled for July 3, where the verification process will proceed.
