PATNA (June 14, 2026). A massive crowd of candidates created a major ruckus at Patliputra Railway Station in the capital city of Patna on Sunday morning (June 14). Angered by the lack of space and a shortage of trains, the examinees resorted to stone-pelting and vandalism within the station premises. The incident triggered chaos at the station, causing panic among regular passengers.
Here is the detailed report of the incident:
Main Cause: Heavy Rush Post-Examination
Lakhs of candidates from across the state had arrived at various centers in and around Patna to appear for the Bihar Police Prohibition Constable Recruitment Examination. Following the conclusion of the exam on June 13, thousands of examinees gathered at Patliputra Station by the early hours of Sunday (dawn) to head back to their hometowns.
Compared to the overwhelming number of passengers, the availability of trains was extremely low. As a result, every arriving train was packed to capacity, leaving absolutely no room for passengers to board.
Timeline of the Ruckus and Vandalism
4:30 AM: A crowd far beyond capacity gathered on Platforms 2 and 3. As soon as a passenger train pulled into the platform, students began jostling and fighting among themselves to board.
5:15 AM: Frustrated by the lack of space and the absence of alternative arrangements by the authorities, the students' anger boiled over. Some anti-social elements pulled the emergency chains of other trains to stop them, blockading the railway tracks.
5:45 AM: The agitated crowd began shouting slogans against the railway administration and started pelting stones at station shops, the enquiry counter, and vending machines. The windows of a few trains parked at the station were also shattered.
Police Action and Administrative Statement
Upon receiving information about the incident, a heavy contingent of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and local police rushed to the spot. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the rioters and bring the situation under control.
Official Statement from the Patna District Magistrate (DM): "We received reports of the crowd spiraling out of control at Patliputra Station. A few miscreants attempted to disrupt order, but the police acted promptly to handle the situation. Security arrangements at the station are now fully tightened, and train operations have returned to normal."
Railway's Decision: Special Trains Operationalized
To defuse the tension and safely evacuate the students, the East Central Railway (ECR) took immediate action. Officials of the Danapur Division decided to run two special MEMU passenger trains for the Muzaffarpur, Chhapra, and Barauni routes. After 8:30 AM, the candidates were dispatched to their respective destinations via these special trains, bringing complete normalcy back to the station.
Security Alert: The railway administration has started scanning the CCTV footage of the incident. FIRs are being registered against the anti-social elements identified in the vandalism and stone-pelting for damaging public property.
