DM Kumar Gaurav Alert Over Flood Threat; Conducts Surprise Inspection of Aurai, Katra, and Gaighat

Muzaffarpur. As the monsoon becomes active, water levels in rivers across North Bihar have started to rise. In view of the potential flood threat, the Muzaffarpur district administration is on high alert. On Thursday, District Magistrate (DM) Kumar Gaurav visited the district's most sensitive flood-prone blocks—Aurai, Katra, and Gaighat—to assess preparedness on the ground. During the visit, he conducted an in-depth review of everything from the integrity of embankments to the arrangements at relief sites.

Strict Eye on Embankments; Clear Instructions to Officials

The DM began his inspection in the areas along the Bagmati River. He closely examined the sections of the embankments in Aurai and Katra, where the risk of erosion is highest when water levels rise. The DM gave strict instructions to engineers of the Water Resources Department to maintain 24-hour monitoring of the embankments and to carry out repair work on a war footing wherever potential weaknesses are identified.

During the meeting, DM Kumar Gaurav stated in no uncertain terms that any negligence in flood management would be inexcusable. "Dealing with floods is our top priority, and there will be no shortage of resources for this task," he asserted.

Assessment of Relief Sites and Facilities

The DM also inspected various relief sites in the area. He directed that proper arrangements for drinking water, electricity, and sanitation be ensured in schools and other buildings identified to house affected people in the event of a flood. Additionally, instructions were given to finalize plans for special facilities for women and children, as well as the operation of community kitchens.

According to the report prepared by the administration:

Boat Operations: A route chart for boats has been prepared to ensure the safe evacuation of people trapped during floods.

Relief Materials: A sufficient quantity of polythene sheets and dry rations has been kept in reserve.

Control Room: The district-level control room has been ordered to remain active 24/7 so that an immediate response can be provided in any emergency.

Review of Degree College and Admission Process

Beyond flood preparedness, the DM also assessed the status of educational activities in the region. He reviewed the ongoing admission process in local degree colleges. The DM instructed officials to ensure that students' studies are not disrupted by flooding and that they do not face any inconvenience during the admission process. If college campuses are impacted by floods, instructions were given to make alternative arrangements.

Dialogue with Public Representatives and Call for Cooperation

During his inspection of Aurai, Katra, and Gaighat, the DM interacted with local public representatives and villagers. He appealed to the public not to panic as water levels rise and to follow the guidelines issued by the administration. He emphasized the need for better coordination between the administration and the public so that relief can reach every needy person in times of disaster.

Senior district officials have been instructed to submit weekly reports to the headquarters so that the situation can be monitored at the highest level. This visit by the Muzaffarpur administration clarifies that the government is not in a mood to take any risks regarding flood management this year.
