Darbhanga to Become 'Makhana Hub': Establishment of Center of Excellence and NABL Lab at a Cost of ₹18 Crore
Darbhanga: 'Makhana' (Fox Nut), which has become synonymous with the global taste and identity of Mithila, is now set to soar to new heights. With the concerted efforts of the central and state governments, major projects are being implemented on the ground to transform Darbhanga into a global hub for Makhana production. Recently, Darbhanga MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur shared significant information regarding this, which will prove to be a major milestone not only for Makhana farmers but for the economy of the entire Mithila region.
Makhana Hub: The Beginning of a New Economic Revolution
Recognizing the immense potential for Makhana production in Darbhanga, the government has decided to establish a 'Center of Excellence' here. A sum of ₹10 crore will be spent on its construction. This center will serve as a hub for research and innovation in advanced Makhana farming, seed conservation, and processing technology.
Additionally, to ensure the quality of products and certification in line with international standards, a 'NABL-accredited Lab' is being established at a cost of ₹8 crore. The total budget for these two projects is ₹18 crore, which is significant enough to transform the landscape of the Makhana industry.
Significance of the Center of Excellence
The Center of Excellence will not just be a building but a 'knowledge center' for Makhana farmers. Its primary roles will include:
Advanced Seed Technology: Developing new seed varieties to increase Makhana yield and protect crops from diseases.
Training: Familiarizing farmers with modern scientific farming methods so they can achieve higher production at a lower cost.
Innovation in Processing: Emphasizing the quality and branding of not just the seeds, but various value-added products derived from them (such as Makhana Kheer mix, Makhana powder, roasted Makhana, etc.).
NABL Lab: Proof of Quality
It has often been observed that Indian products must meet strict quality standards to enter international markets. With the establishment of the NABL-accredited lab, local producers will no longer need to depend on Delhi or other metropolitan cities for the testing of their Makhana.
Global Access: Once certified by the lab, Mithila’s Makhana can be exported to markets around the world without any hurdles.
Consumer Trust: NABL certification serves as a guarantee of the purity and quality of the product, which will significantly boost customer confidence.
Vision of MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur
MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur stated, "Mithila’s Makhana, which has now received the GI Tag, is our cultural heritage. Our government’s goal is to make it a global brand rather than limiting it to just an agricultural product. Through the Center of Excellence and the NABL lab, we will take Makhana and other aquaculture products to new heights."
He further added that Darbhanga holds immense potential for aquaculture. These centers will help improve the quality of not only Makhana but also fish and other aquatic products, thereby fulfilling the Prime Minister's dream of doubling farmers' income.
Impact on Farmers and the Local Economy
Millions of farmers are directly associated with the Makhana industry. With the arrival of these new projects:
Job Creation: The operation of processing units and the lab will provide employment opportunities for local youth in the technical sector.
Increased Income: The role of middlemen will be reduced, and through direct processing, farmers will receive a fair price for their produce.
Boost in Exports: Due to better quality, local products will now be able to be exported directly to foreign countries, bringing in foreign exchange.
A New Identity for Mithila
Darbhanga’s Makhana is now cherished in every corner of India. This government investment acts as a lifeline for Makhana farmers and will create a more favorable environment for investment in the region. The path to Darbhanga gaining recognition as 'Makhana City' has now become much easier.
This investment of ₹18 crore is a historic step for the agricultural landscape of Darbhanga. With research, development, and quality certification available in one place, a new era for the Makhana industry will begin. It is a matter of pride not only for Darbhanga but for the entire state of Bihar that traditional farming like Makhana is now being supported by modern science. In the coming times, this Center of Excellence will provide new strength to the economy of Mithila.
