Taking serious note of this grim situation, the Municipal Commissioner adopted a stern stance, issuing an ultimatum to private sanitation agencies and giving strict directives to clean up the city entirely by Saturday evening.
Why Was the Sanitation System Paralyzed for Five Days?
Permanent and contractual sanitation workers operating under the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation had completely boycotted work for the past five days over their various demands—such as pending remuneration, regularization, and other service conditions. Due to the strike, the entire waste management apparatus of the corporation derailed completely.
Door-to-Door Garbage Collection Halted: Vehicles carrying out door-to-door waste collection remained parked for five days, causing trash to accumulate inside people's homes.
Garbage Littering the Streets: Lacking regular sweeping, shopkeepers and local citizens were compelled to throw garbage right along the roadsides, turning the city's main thoroughfares into open dumpsters.

The Municipal Commissioner issued a two-pronged warning, stating that by Saturday evening, the removal of all remaining garbage from every corner of the city must be completed with 100 percent certainty. He also made it clear that if any laxity or negligence was observed in fulfilling these directions, harsh punitive action would be taken against the respective private agencies, including heavy financial penalties and the cancellation of their contracts.
Cleaning Campaign Launched on a War Footing, Continuing Even on Sunday
Jumping into action following the Municipal Commissioner's ultimatum, private sanitation agencies deployed their teams across the city starting Saturday afternoon. Dozens of tractors, JCB machines, and hundreds of additional sanitation workers were deployed to carry out garbage lifting on a war footing.
Pace Picked Up From Saturday Night: Working day and night, the agencies began clearing the mountains of garbage accumulated near major markets, Mahashay Dyodhi, Variety Chowk, Kotwali Chowk, Station Road, and main roadsides.
Mega Campaign Continued on Sunday: Since the backlog of five days' worth of garbage was massive, the entire trash could not be cleared even by Saturday night. Consequently, this mega sanitation campaign continued at full throttle on Sunday despite it being a holiday. Senior municipal corporation officials personally stepped out onto the field to conduct surprise inspections of various wards and monitor the cleaning operations.
