Bhagalpur Grapples with Monsoon Apathy and Oppressive Humidity: City’s Pace Slows Down Awaiting Rainfall

Bhagalpur: Despite the overall active status of the monsoon across the country, a distinct apathy of the rain gods is being felt in Bhagalpur and its surrounding areas. The second week of July has begun, yet the city is still awaiting a good, steady spell of rain. For the past several days, clouds have been gathering in the sky, only to pass by without shedding a drop, resulting in oppressive humidity and extreme heat throughout the city.

Residents Struggle with Heat and Humidity

Usually, in the month of July, the streets and roads would be drenched, but this year, the weather pattern is completely different. Looking at the weather data up to July 8, 2026, Bhagalpur has recorded significantly lower rainfall than the average. The humidity is so high that stepping outdoors by mid-day has become a daunting task.

According to the local meteorological center, residents have found no relief despite a slight dip in temperatures over the last 24 hours. Amidst high moisture levels in the air and the movement of clouds, the intensity of the sun feels searing. The maximum daytime temperature continues to hover between 33°C and 35°C, while the nights are proving to be equally stifling.

Rising Concerns for Farmers

A large part of Bhagalpur depends on agriculture. This is the most crucial time for paddy sowing, but due to the lack of sufficient rainfall, cracks have begun to appear in the fields. Farmers express that if there is no good rainfall in the next few days, meeting the Kharif crop targets will become difficult. Dependence on electricity-based pump sets has increased, further driving up the cost of farming.

Weather Department Forecast

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the activity of the monsoon is currently slightly sluggish in Bhagalpur compared to other parts of Bihar. The department has forecast cloudy skies between July 8 and July 13, with the possibility of light rain or thundershowers in some areas. However, no warnings for major cyclonic effects or heavy rainfall have been issued for Bhagalpur at present, indicating that the true generosity of the monsoon may take some more time.

Why is the Situation Like This?

Weather experts explain that a shift in the direction of a 'Low-Pressure Area' forming over the Bay of Bengal has affected this part of Bihar. Because the northern limit of the monsoon has shifted more toward Rajasthan and Punjab, the flow of moisture-laden winds in the plains of Bihar has slowed down. This is the reason why, despite the overcast skies, rain is failing to occur.

Hopes of the City Residents

The weather department states that the situation may improve in the next 2-3 days, with moderate rainfall expected in some parts of the city. Showers accompanied by lightning may be the only relief from this humid heat. The people of the city are now waiting not just for the clouds to rumble, but for them to pour, so that the cooling showers can reach the coastal areas of the Ganga as well.

This delay in the monsoon in Bhagalpur has not only affected daily life but has also posed a challenge to the agricultural economy. The coming week will be extremely critical for Bhagalpur. If the monsoon activity picks up, the residents will undoubtedly find relief from this intense humidity. Until then, people are advised to take precautions against this exhausting phase of heat and humidity.
