Bhagalpur, Office Correspondent: On the auspicious occasion of the first Somwari (Monday) of the month of Sawan, a wonderful confluence of faith, reverence, and spirituality was witnessed in Bhagalpur, a prominent center of the divine land and the Anga region. Since morning, crowds of devotees thronged the city's major Ganga ghats and temples to mark the first Monday of the sacred Sawan month. Especially as evening fell, the grand and ethereal scene that emerged at Namami Gange Ghat completely imbued the entire atmosphere with devotion to Lord Shiva. Driven by a massive influx of millions of Shiva devotees, kanwarias, and local citizens arriving from distant areas, an ocean of faith surged at Namami Gange Ghat, where the entire environment echoed with thunderous chants of "Har Har Mahadev" and "Bol Bom."
First Somwari Falls Under Sukarma Yoga, Rituals Begin at Early Dawn
According to the panchang, this year's first Somwari of Sawan was celebrated under a highly special and auspicious combination, namely Sukarma Yoga.
Chants Echoing from Brahma Muhurta: From the Brahma Muhurta on Monday morning, devotees seeking to take a holy bath began arriving at Bhagalpur's various Ganga ghats. Specifically at Namami Gange Ghat, Shiva devotees stood in orderly queues from the early hours of dawn to take a dip in the sacred Uttarvahini Ganga.
Resolve and Water Offering: Following the ritual bath, devotees took a formal vow, filled sacred Ganga water into their kanwars, and commenced their journey toward Baba Baidyanath Dham (Deoghar) and local temples. Due to it being the first Somwari of Sawan, a distinct energy and radiance were visible in the enthusiasm of the kanwarias.
Grand and Picturesque Evening Scene at Namami Gange Ghat
On the evening of August 3, the sight at Namami Gange Ghat was a marvel to behold. Special arrangements had been made at this facility-equipped ghat by the administration and local committees:
Illumination of Lamps and Cultural Ambiance: As evening descended, Namami Gange Ghat was magnificently decorated with thousands of earthen lamps, colorful lights, and flowers. Women and devotees seated on the ghat steps performed deepdaan (offering of lamps), causing the banks of the Ganga to gleam.
Organization of Grand Maha Aarti: A special Ganga Maha Aarti was organized at Namami Gange Ghat on the evening of the first Somwari. Amidst Vedic chanting, the blowing of conch shells, the reverberation of damrus, and the ringing of bells and gongs, priests performed the aarti of Mother Ganga, moving the millions of present devotees to dance in ecstatic devotion. Everywhere, the atmosphere was filled solely with the worship of Bholenath.
Security and Administrative Vigilance: Keen Watch Kept at Every Corner
To control the massive crowds and prevent any form of inconvenience, the district administration remained fully alert:
Deployment of Police Force and Divers: Under the direction of the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Bhagalpur, foolproof security arrangements were established from Namami Gange Ghat to all major temples across the city. In addition to setting up barricades in deep water, NDRF and SDRF teams alongside skilled divers were deployed.
Surveillance via CCTV and Drones: Through the control room, keen watch was maintained over crowds and individual movements entering and exiting the ghat using CCTV cameras and drones, ensuring the festival concluded in a peaceful and secure environment.
Chants of Har Har Mahadev Reverberate Across Other City Temples
Alongside Namami Gange Ghat, swelling crowds of devotees also gathered for the first Somwari at Bhagalpur's ancient Budhanath Temple, Shivshakti Temple in Adampur, Kupeshwarnath Temple (Kotwali Chowk), and Bhootnath Temple. Long queues for jalabhishek (water offering) persisted at the temples since morning. Arrangements for free distribution of Ganga water and medical camps were also established at multiple locations, offering immense convenience to kanwarias and fasting devotees arriving from afar.
The grand and divine spectacle witnessed at Bhagalpur's Namami Gange Ghat on the first Somwari of Sawan (August 3) once again proved how deep the roots of faith and dedication run in Indian culture. Amidst evening aarti, the brilliance of laser and light displays, and echoing chants of "Bol Bom," the event not only purified the soil of Bhagalpur but also ignited an unquenchable flame of spirituality in the heart of every devotee.
