Woman Brutally Assaulted by In-Laws for Planning to Testify in Court; Victim Left Critically Injured
Bhagalpur/Nathnagar: A harrowing and deeply distressing incident occurred on Monday morning in Belkhoria village, under the jurisdiction of the Madhusudanpur police station. A married woman was subjected to a life-threatening assault by her in-laws simply because she was on her way to the police station to testify in a case concerning her husband's death. The victim is currently critically injured and undergoing treatment.
Sequence of Events
According to reports, the woman’s husband had passed away unexpectedly some time ago. Ever since his demise, her father-in-law, Mahendra Yadav, and brothers-in-law, Pankaj Yadav, Mantu Yadav, and Santu Yadav, had been conspiring to evict her from the marital home. It is alleged that the in-laws had physically assaulted her in the past as well, leading her to file a formal complaint (FIR) at the police station.
In connection with that case, the woman had been summoned to the Madhusudanpur police station on Monday to provide her testimony. At approximately 7:00 AM on Monday, as she prepared to leave for the station, her in-laws became aware of her intentions.
The Brutal Assault
Enraged by her decision to testify, the in-laws stormed into her room, armed with weapons and iron rods. The accused began beating her mercilessly. During the assault, the accused, Pankaj Yadav, struck the woman on the head with an iron rod with the intent to kill, while others rained down multiple blows upon her. The brutal attack left the woman severely bleeding and unconscious on the ground.
During the incident, the woman's children ran out of the house and began screaming for help, drawing the attention of nearby villagers. Upon seeing the villagers approaching, the assailants fled the scene, issuing death threats. Later, with the help of the villagers, the unconscious woman was rushed to the Madhusudanpur police station.
Police Action and Medical Condition
Upon receiving the information, police reached the scene and, noting the woman's critical condition, immediately rushed her to the Nathnagar Referral Hospital for emergency care. Due to the severity of her head trauma and lack of improvement, doctors later referred her to Mayaganj Hospital (JLNMCH) for advanced treatment, where she is currently battling for her life.
In this matter, the police have taken swift action and registered a named FIR against the primary accused. The authorities stated that given the sensitivity of the case, a special team has been formed, and raids are being conducted at various locations to apprehend the absconding suspects.
Questions Regarding Law and Safety
This incident is not only a gruesome display of domestic violence but also a serious case of obstructing the legal and judicial process. A woman who was already struggling to seek justice after her husband's death has now been targeted with a lethal attack because of that very pursuit of justice. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among the local population. Villagers have demanded that the police arrest all those involved as soon as possible and ensure they receive the strictest punishment, so that women in the future can feel safe.
