Violent Protests in Purnia in Support of Delhi Movement: Bansi Students Rampage, Police Use Force; DM and SSP Take Charge
Purnia: In support of an ongoing major movement in the country's capital, Delhi, the situation in Bihar's Purnia district suddenly turned extremely tense. Protesters staged aggressive demonstrations in several places, including the Baisi subdivision area of Purnia. A fierce clash erupted between protesters and the police, with both sides struggling heavily to control and manage the situation. Looking at the gravity of the circumstances, top district administration officials—the District Magistrate (DM) and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)—personally stepped into the field to take charge.
Echoes of the Delhi Movement and Outset of Protests in Baisi
For the past few days, echoes of movements and demonstrations over various issues in Delhi have reached other states across the country. In this sequence, student organizations and supporters within the Baisi police station limits of Purnia district called for coming out onto the streets in protest to back the Delhi movement.
Initially, this demonstration appeared peaceful, but before long, a large number of people and students joined it. Raising slogans, the protesters attempted to block roadways and vehemently vented their frustration against the administration. When the local police administration tried to reason with them and clear the road, the situation deteriorated further.
Aggravated Protest: Stone Pelting and Police Use of Force
Before long, the anger of the protesters boiled over, and the demonstration took a violent turn. Some miscreants within the crowd started stone pelting at the police force, creating a stampede-like situation on the spot. A few police personnel sustained minor injuries in this sudden stone pelting, and government vehicles were also damaged.
To maintain law and order and disperse the aggressive crowd, the police were forced to resort to a mild lathi charge (use of force). The police fired tear gas shells and chased away the miscreants to bring the situation under control. Following this clash, an atmosphere of panic and chaos prevailed throughout the Baisi market and surrounding areas. Shopkeepers immediately pulled down their shutters, and movement on the routes came to a standstill.
DM and SSP Take Charge, Heavy Police Force Deployed
Seeing the severity of the incident, the District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Purnia swung into immediate action. Both top officials personally arrived at the spot accompanied by a heavy police force, riot-control vehicles (Vajra vehicles), and a riot-control squad to assess the situation.
Strong Message: Speaking jointly to the media and local citizens, the DM and SSP made it clear that no miscreant taking the law into their own hands would be spared.
Flag March: The administration conducted a flag march with security forces in sensitive areas and appealed to the people to maintain peace.
Identification and Action: Police officials stated that antisocial elements indulging in stone pelting and creating disruptions are being identified based on CCTV footage and video recordings, and strict legal action will be taken against them.
Current Situation and Administration's Appeal
Presently, the situation in Baisi and other sensitive areas of Purnia is entirely under control, but as a precautionary measure, a heavy deployment of police forces and magistrates has been made. The administration is continuously keeping a close eye on the situation. The district administration has appealed to the general public, especially youth and students, not to pay heed to any kind of rumors and to maintain peace and harmony.
