What began as a verbal altercation quickly escalated into large-scale stone-pelting, creating panic among participants and bystanders.
As stones were hurled from both sides, chaos spread across the area. Pedestrians and shopkeepers rushed to take shelter inside nearby buildings to protect themselves. Several people were reportedly injured in the violence, including some police personnel. The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Police Resort to Baton Charge to Disperse the Crowd
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), and a large contingent of police personnel rushed to the spot. Officials initially attempted to calm the crowd through persuasion, but as the stone-pelting continued, police carried out a mild baton charge to disperse the mob and regain control of the situation.
The area was cordoned off, and police launched a search operation to identify those responsible for the violence. Several suspects were detained for questioning. Additional security personnel have since been deployed around Railway Station Chowk and nearby localities to prevent any further disturbances.
Tension Also Reported in Khagaria and Jamui
Apart from Araria, isolated incidents of tension were also reported in Khagaria and Jamui districts during Muharram processions. In some places, disagreements over the procession route led to confrontations, while in others, minor arguments escalated into stone-pelting.

Authorities temporarily halted the processions in some sensitive areas, strengthened security arrangements, and later allowed the events to continue under close police supervision.
