Truck Loaded with Iron Rods Runs Over Two Pedestrians; One Dead, One Critical; Villagers Protest by Blocking Road

A horrific road accident near Deokuli in the Bihta police station area of Patna district on Tuesday shattered the lives of two families. A speeding truck loaded with iron rods (rebar) struck two people walking along the roadside. The impact was so severe that one person died on the spot, while the second individual is currently battling for his life.

Details of the Incident: The Truck Loaded with Iron Rods Became a Harbinger of Death

According to the information received, the deceased has been identified as Nepali Mahto (55). At the time of the accident, he was walking with another person when an out-of-control truck, heavily loaded with iron rods, struck them from behind. The collision was so intense that Nepali Mahto succumbed to his injuries instantly. The second injured youth was rushed to the Bihta Community Health Centre (CHC) with the help of locals. Given his critical condition, he was later referred to a hospital in Patna for specialized medical treatment.

Protests and Road Blockade by Angry Villagers

Immediately following the incident, massive outrage spread among the local villagers. The angry crowd blocked the main Bihta-Aurangabad road and staged a protest by burning tires, bringing traffic to a complete halt. The protestors argued that the reckless speed of heavy vehicles on this route is a frequent cause of accidents.

The villagers presented the following demands to the administration:

Adequate Compensation: Immediate financial assistance and appropriate compensation for the family of the deceased.

Arrest of the Driver: Immediate arrest and strict punishment for the truck driver, who fled the scene after the incident.

Improved Security Measures: Installation of speed breakers to control the speed of heavy vehicles on the road and increased police patrolling.

Police Action

Upon receiving the information, the Bihta police arrived at the scene. Efforts were made to pacify the protestors, but the crowd remained firm on their demands for compensation. Police officials have given assurances that:

The accused driver has been identified, and raids are being conducted to ensure his arrest.

Strict surveillance will now be maintained on heavy vehicles violating road safety rules.

The body of the deceased has been sent to the Sub-Divisional Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Questions Raised Again Over Road Safety

The Bihta region, due to its industrial activity and construction projects, is constantly filled with heavy vehicles. Local residents allege that trucks carrying construction materials (like iron rods and gravel) are often overloaded, and there is no check on their speed. Due to administrative negligence, people are falling victim to road accidents on a daily basis.

Atmosphere of Grief

As soon as the news of Nepali Mahto's death reached his village, it sparked a scene of devastation. His family is inconsolable after losing their sole breadwinner. An atmosphere of mourning has gripped the village, and everyone is pleading with the administration for justice.

The loss of a life in a road accident and the critical injury of another is a deeply tragic event. The administration must not only ensure compensation for the victim's family but also take concrete steps to prevent such incidents in the future. Strictly enforcing road safety rules and curbing illegal overloading are the only ways to prevent such tragedies. Currently, the police are attempting to control the situation at the site and maintain law and order.
