Patna: The Bihar Road Construction Department has initiated preparations to introduce toll collection on State Highways, marking a major step toward modernizing the state's road transport system. According to the department's plan, toll collection on selected State Highways will begin from November.

Recently, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced that only commercial vehicles would be required to pay toll tax on State Highways, while private vehicles would remain exempt. Following this announcement, the government has decided to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology at toll plazas to accurately identify commercial vehicles.

AI Technology to Identify Vehicles

According to the Road Construction Department, the newly installed AI-based ANPR cameras will scan the number plate of every vehicle passing through the toll plaza. In addition to capturing the registration number, the system will instantly determine whether the vehicle is registered as a private or commercial vehicle by accessing the official vehicle registration database.

This technology will eliminate the need for manual verification by toll operators. The entire identification process will be completed within seconds, ensuring smoother traffic movement and reducing waiting time at toll plazas.

Relief for Private Vehicle Owners

The Chief Minister has already clarified that toll tax on State Highways will be collected only from commercial vehicles. Private cars, private SUVs, and other non-commercial vehicles will not be required to pay toll charges.

The government believes this policy will prevent any additional financial burden on ordinary citizens while generating the revenue needed for road maintenance and infrastructure development.

New System to Be Implemented from November

The Road Construction Department has almost completed preparations to begin toll collection in November. Necessary technical equipment and digital systems are being installed at selected toll plazas.

With the introduction of ANPR technology, authorities will no longer depend solely on the color of the number plate. Instead, the system will verify the actual registration details directly from the transport department's database, making such fraudulent practices far more difficult.
