The Administration's Alternative Plan to Combat Gridlock

Bhagalpur: The 'Vikramshila Setu', the lifeline connecting North and South Bihar, is currently facing immense strain due to repair work and structural damage. Ever since a slab near pillar number 133 of the bridge was damaged in May 2026, commuting between Bhagalpur and Naugachia has become a major challenge. To provide relief from the hours-long traffic jams on the bridge, the district administration has now adopted waterways (ferry and cargo services) as a primary alternative, ensuring that public movement and the supply of essential goods are not disrupted.

Increasing Pressure and the Problem of Traffic Jams

Since the damage to the bridge slab, there has been immense pressure on traffic. Although the administration has attempted to maintain traffic flow through the construction of a Bailey bridge and ongoing repairs, the increasing volume of vehicles frequently causes gridlock. Recently, traffic jams lasting up to 10 hours have been observed on the bridge, severely affecting ambulances, school buses, and daily commuters. Local residents are now demanding that the waterway alternative be further strengthened to reduce dependence on the bridge.

Ferry and Cargo Service: The Administration's 'Lifeline' Plan

In a high-level meeting chaired by District Magistrate Dr. Nawal Kishore Chaudhary, it was decided that the ferry service between Barari Ghat and Mahadevpur Ghat should be made completely organized and safe.

Free Service: The boat service for passengers and two-wheelers has been made completely free of cost. The government has taken the responsibility of paying the boat operators so that there is no financial burden on the passengers.

Priority for Cargo: Not only for passengers, but special permission has been granted to cargo vessels for the supply of milk, vegetables, medicines, and other essential items. Rates have also been fixed to prevent black marketing.

Safety Standards: The administration has issued strict guidelines for ferry operations. Operating any boat without life jackets and safety equipment is prohibited. An SDRF team has been deployed to monitor the waterway.

Other Measures to Free the Bridge from Traffic

In addition to the ferry service, the administration has taken several other steps to streamline traffic on the bridge:

Dedicated Lane for Bikers: A proposal is in place to create a 1.5-meter dedicated lane for bikers on the bridge so that they do not get trapped between long queues of four-wheelers.

Removal of Rumble Strips and Breakers: Instructions have been issued to remove unnecessary speed breakers and rumble strips from the bridge to prevent deceleration of traffic flow.

Quick Response Team (QRT): To take immediate action in case of any emergency or vehicle breakdown, police QRT teams have been deployed on both ends of the bridge.

The Path Forward and Permanent Solutions

The administration's goal is to provide relief to the public through improved waterways and better traffic management until the repair work of the Vikramshila Setu is fully completed (with the target of constructing a truss bridge by November 2026). However, local residents and experts believe that for the structural integrity of the bridge, mere repairs are not enough; regular scanning and long-term maintenance are essential.

Currently, the ferry service operating on the waves of the Ganges has become not only an alternative route but also a symbol of hope for the millions of people in Bhagalpur and Naugachia. Administrative foresight and the effective use of waterways currently appear to be the only safe way out of this 'traffic crisis'.
