Sultanganj at the Final Stage of Preparations; Administration on High Alert Regarding Logistics
SULTANGANJ (Bhagalpur): The holy city of Sultanganj is gearing up for the grand organization of the world-famous Shravani Mela 2026. This year, the sacred fair will be held from July 30, 2026, to August 28, 2026. The administration has initiated preparations on a war footing to welcome millions of Shiva devotees who will arrive at the Ajgaivinath Dham, situated on the banks of the Uttarvahini Ganga, to collect holy water to offer to Baba Baidyanath in Deoghar.
The Mahakumbh of Preparations: The July 24 Goal
With very little time remaining before the fair begins, the district administration has issued strict instructions to all concerned departments to complete all construction and logistical arrangements by July 24, 2026. Comprehensive arrangements are being made for the convenience of pilgrims along the approximately 105–110 km long Kanwariya path stretching from Sultanganj to Deoghar.
Key Arrangements and Modern Facilities
This year, the administration's primary focus is on providing a safe, modern, and convenient travel experience to the Kanwariyas:
Tent City and Accommodation: A Tent City with a total capacity of 2,650 beds is being constructed across Bhagalpur, Banka, and Munger. Additionally, German hangars and Swiss cottages have been arranged to protect pilgrims from inclement weather.
Technical Intervention: For the first time, AI-based CCTV surveillance and drones are being utilized for security and crowd management. Simultaneously, a 'modern Argha system' is being installed at the Baba Ajgaivinath temple to make the water-offering process smoother.
Basic Amenities: Arrangements for 24-hour power supply, clean drinking water via RO plants, and round-the-clock medical centers have been established. There is also a plan to provide pure and Satvik food to the Kanwariyas through 'Didi Ki Rasoi.'
Traffic Management: Due to partial damage to the Vikramshila Setu, the administration has finalized a comprehensive plan to control crowds through the use of a Bailey bridge and alternative routes.
Challenges and Ground Reality
Although the administration is fully active, the pace of work has been slightly affected in some areas due to rainfall. Issues like waterlogging and mud on certain stretches of the Kanwariya path have emerged, for which repair work using heavy machinery is ongoing on a war footing. The administration maintains that all obstacles will be cleared before the July 24 deadline.
A Resolve for a Safe and Spiritual Journey
The governments of Bihar and Jharkhand are leaving no stone unturned to make this year's Shravani Mela memorable. During the fair, cultural programs, Ganga Maha-Aarti, and special laser shows will also be organized to provide pilgrims with a pleasant spiritual experience alongside their devotion.
The Sultanganj administration claims that the facilities provided to the Kanwariyas this year will be far superior and more modern than in previous years. With the unwavering faith of Shiva devotees, the administration's preparations are set to ensure a safe and smooth 'Bol Bam' pilgrimage.
