Shia Community Takes Out 'Alam' Procession with Deep Devotion; 'Ya Hussain' Chants Echo in Memory of Imam Hussain’s Martyrdom
Bhagalpur: Amidst the somber atmosphere of Muharram, the Shia community in Bhagalpur took out the 'Alam' procession with deep devotion and reverence. The procession, which began at the Bada Imambara in Asanandpur, traversed through various parts of the city before reaching Karbala, where devotees, with tearful eyes, performed 'Pahlam' (the ritual conclusion) while mourning the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his companions.
A Flood of Grief and Faith
The procession commenced at the Bada Imambara, where a large number of devotees gathered to pay their respects to the 'Alam' (the sacred flag). During the procession, 'Azadars' (mourners) performed 'Matam' (ritual chest-beating) while chanting 'Ya Hussain' and 'Ya Ali'. Participants, dressed in black, expressed their deep sorrow for the sacrifice made at Karbala.
The caravan of mourners moved forward with traditional banners, Alams, and symbols of the Ta'ziya. 'Sabeels' (stalls providing water and sherbet) were set up along the route, offering cooling refreshments to passersby and those participating in the procession.
A Model of Tradition and Discipline
The most notable feature of this procession was its discipline. Youth from the Shia community marched in orderly ranks while performing Matam, while the elders reiterated the message of Imam Hussain—a struggle for justice and truth. The 'Anjumans' (mourning troupes) accompanying the procession recited 'Noha-khwani' (elegies), creating a deeply moving and spiritual atmosphere.
Pahlam at Karbala
Passing through various major routes of the city, the procession reached Karbala in the late afternoon. There, the 'Pahlam' ritual was performed with full religious decorum and traditions. In the Karbala complex, the mourners once again performed Matam in memory of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom and offered prayers for peace, brotherhood, and harmony in the country.
Administrative Vigilance and Security
Given the scale of the procession, the district administration and police department had made elaborate security arrangements. Police forces were deployed along the entire route, and the situation was monitored using drone cameras. Officials and magistrates from various police stations in Bhagalpur accompanied the procession to ensure that no untoward incident occurred and that traffic flow remained smooth. Members of the 'Shanti Samiti' (Peace Committee) also played an active role during the procession, ensuring coordination between different communities.
A Message of Social Harmony
Religious leaders of the Shia community stated on this occasion, "The martyrdom of Imam Hussain is not merely the mourning of one community; it serves as an inspiration for all of humanity to stand against injustice." They appealed to the people to strengthen mutual brotherhood on this sacred occasion.
The procession in Bhagalpur is known for its simplicity and religious fervor. Like every year, devotees participated in large numbers this year as well, demonstrating their unwavering devotion to Hazrat Imam Hussain. Devotees continued to visit the Karbala complex until late in the evening, standing as a testament to the deep roots of communal harmony in Bhagalpur.
