Scorpio Plunges into Gandak Canal Amid Heavy Rain; Driver Successfully Escapes Unharmed
Gopalganj (Kuchaikote): A major road accident has been reported from the Gopalganj district of Bihar, where a Scorpio SUV spun out of control and plunged into the Gandak Canal near Baghavach village under the Kuchaikote police station area on Monday night. The accident occurred amidst torrential rainfall. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, as the driver managed to escape from the vehicle safely in the nick of time.
Poor Visibility Due to Rain Causes Vehicle to Smash Through Railing
According to local sources, the region was experiencing heavy downpours on Monday night. Due to the blinding rain and darkness, visibility on the road was extremely poor. During this time, a speeding Scorpio passing over the Gandak Canal bridge near Baghavach village suddenly lost control. The vehicle smashed right through the protective railing of the bridge and plunged directly into the deep canal below.
Prompt Action by Local Residents and Police
Hearing the loud crash, nearby villagers rushed to the spot and immediately alerted the Kuchaikote police station. Upon receiving the information, a police team arrived at the scene with rescue equipment. Despite the darkness and heavy rain, the police, alongside local villagers and divers, launched an immediate rescue operation.
Scorpio Pulled Out with a Crane
Following strenuous efforts, the police deployed a crane on Tuesday morning to pull the submerged Scorpio out of the canal. When the vehicle was retrieved, it was found completely empty. According to initial police assessments, as soon as the car plunged into the water, the driver showed great presence of mind by opening the door or window, escaping safely, and swimming to the shore.
The Kuchaikote police have taken custody of the vehicle and are currently using the registration number to track down the owner and driver.
Statement from the Station House Officer (SHO): "The accident was caused by poor driving conditions during the heavy rainfall. Prima facie, the driver appears to be safe as no one was found trapped inside the vehicle. The police are investigating the matter and attempting to establish contact with the vehicle owner."
