Scorching Heat Grips Bhagalpur as Rising Temperatures Disrupt Daily Life; Weather Department Advises Caution
Bhagalpur | Report by Gautam Vedpani
Bhagalpur district witnessed extremely hot and humid weather on Saturday, with intense sunshine and rising temperatures making conditions uncomfortable throughout the day. The mercury climbed steadily from the morning, while hot winds and high humidity during the afternoon significantly increased discomfort for residents. Traffic on roads and public places remained noticeably lighter than usual as many people preferred to stay indoors to avoid the harsh weather.
The sudden rise in temperature affected normal life across the district. Markets, busy intersections, and public spaces saw reduced footfall during peak afternoon hours. Those who ventured outdoors for essential work had to cope with scorching sunlight and oppressive heat. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and to remain well-hydrated.
Temperatures Began Rising Early in the Morning
Although the morning started with relatively normal weather conditions, the temperature began increasing rapidly soon after sunrise. By late morning, the sun had become intense, and by afternoon the heat had reached its peak.
People walking along roads, shopping in markets, or carrying out outdoor work struggled under the blazing sun. Many sought temporary relief under trees, roadside shelters, and shaded public areas.
High Humidity Added to the Discomfort
In addition to soaring temperatures, high humidity made the weather even more uncomfortable. Residents experienced excessive sweating and fatigue as the humid conditions reduced the body's ability to cool itself.
Many households reported that even electric fans and air coolers provided only limited relief. Elderly people, children, and those with existing health conditions were particularly affected by the extreme weather.
Reduced Activity During Peak Afternoon Hours
The intense heat significantly reduced movement on major roads and in commercial areas during the afternoon. Only those with essential work were seen outdoors.
Motorcyclists covered their faces with cloth to protect themselves from the hot winds, while many pedestrians used umbrellas, caps, and scarves to shield themselves from direct sunlight.
Increase in Heat-Related Health Issues
Doctors and healthcare professionals cautioned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat could increase the risk of dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, and heat-related illnesses.
Medical experts advised residents to drink plenty of water, consume oral rehydration solutions (ORS) when necessary, wear lightweight cotton clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Farmers Concerned About Rising Temperatures
The continued increase in temperature has also become a matter of concern for farmers. Agricultural experts have advised farmers to carry out fieldwork during the early morning or late evening hours to reduce exposure to extreme heat.
Experts noted that prolonged high temperatures may affect certain crops, making proper irrigation and regular field monitoring essential.
Electricity Demand Increases
As temperatures continued to rise, electricity consumption also increased significantly. Greater use of fans, air coolers, and air conditioners in homes and commercial establishments contributed to higher power demand across the district.
The electricity department appealed to consumers to use power responsibly and adopt energy-saving practices wherever possible.
Weather Department Issues Advisory
The weather department advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m., when temperatures are typically at their highest.
People who must go outside have been advised to cover their heads, carry sufficient drinking water, wear light-colored cotton clothing, and take special care of children and elderly family members.
Business Activity Affected
The extreme afternoon heat also affected commercial activity, with markets witnessing fewer customers than usual during the hottest hours of the day. Shopkeepers reported that business remained relatively normal during the morning and evening but slowed considerably in the afternoon.
Commercial activity gradually picked up again after sunset as temperatures became slightly more comfortable.
Health Experts Recommend Precautions
Healthcare professionals warned that prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can quickly lead to dehydration. They recommended drinking water at regular intervals, eating fresh fruits, avoiding strenuous physical activity, and taking frequent breaks while working outdoors.
Doctors further advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe dizziness, excessive weakness, fainting, persistent vomiting, or signs of heatstroke.
Saturday's scorching heat, rising temperatures, and humid conditions significantly affected daily life in Bhagalpur. Many residents chose to remain indoors during the afternoon, while those who had to step outside faced considerable discomfort. The weather department has urged people to continue taking necessary precautions against the heat in the coming days. Authorities and health experts have also appealed to the public to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, and seek medical assistance promptly if heat-related symptoms develop.
