Akbarnagar : The sanitation system in Akbarnagar Nagar Panchayat has deteriorated significantly, causing considerable inconvenience to local residents. People have been complaining about the lack of regular cleaning for a long time. With the entire municipal area being serviced by only 15 sanitation workers, maintaining cleanliness across all wards has become increasingly difficult.
Local residents said garbage remains accumulated along several streets and in neighbourhoods because cleaning is not being carried out regularly. Drains are also not cleaned on time, resulting in drainage problems. The situation becomes particularly difficult during rainfall, when stagnant wastewater in several locations creates problems for commuters.
Shortage of Sanitation Workers Worsens Situation
The number of sanitation workers available in the Nagar Panchayat is reportedly insufficient. With only 15 workers responsible for cleaning the entire area, it has become difficult to maintain regular sanitation services across all wards.
According to residents, there is often a significant gap between cleaning operations in different areas. During this period, household and commercial waste continues to accumulate along roadsides. Inadequate garbage-bin facilities at several locations also force some residents to dispose of waste in open areas.
Residents Express Anger Over Poor Sanitation
Residents have expressed growing dissatisfaction with the condition of sanitation services. They said that after Akbarnagar was given Nagar Panchayat status, they expected improvements in basic civic amenities, particularly cleanliness. However, they feel that the sanitation system has not improved as expected.
Residents said accumulated garbage often causes unpleasant odours. During summer and the rainy season, piles of waste can also contribute to an increase in mosquitoes and other insects, raising concerns about hygiene and public health.
Drain Cleaning Also Needed
Residents have demanded regular cleaning of drains in addition to road and street cleaning. In several places, garbage has accumulated inside drains, affecting the flow of wastewater. During rainfall, clogged drains can overflow, causing dirty water to spread onto roads.
Residents said that timely drain cleaning and regular garbage collection could significantly reduce waterlogging and sanitation-related problems.
Demand for Additional Sanitation Workers
Residents have demanded the recruitment or deployment of additional sanitation workers to improve cleanliness in the Nagar Panchayat area. They said it is practically difficult for only 15 workers to maintain sanitation across the entire municipal jurisdiction.
They have also demanded ward-wise cleaning schedules, sufficient vehicles for garbage collection and adequate garbage bins at public places.
Need for Regular Monitoring
Residents said that simply increasing the number of sanitation workers would not be enough. Regular monitoring of sanitation activities is equally important. The municipal administration should ensure that every ward is cleaned according to a fixed schedule and that accumulated garbage is removed promptly.
Residents have urged officials to conduct inspections and assess the actual condition of sanitation services before taking corrective measures.
