NH-22 Median Opening Near Madhaul Turn Closed to Improve Road Safety; District Administration Aims to Reduce Accidents
Muzaffarpur: In a major step to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents, the Muzaffarpur district administration has closed a median opening (U-turn/crossing point) on National Highway-22 (NH-22) before the Madhaul turn on the Muzaffarpur-Hajipur Bypass. The decision came into effect on Tuesday following the recommendation of the District Road Safety Committee. Officials said the closure was necessary because the crossing had become a frequent site of road accidents and posed a serious risk to motorists.
According to the administration, the opening was often used by motorists to cross the highway or enter the opposite carriageway in an unsafe manner. Such movements repeatedly led to dangerous situations and several serious road accidents. With the closure now in place, officials expect traffic flow on the highway to become safer and more organized.
Decision Based on Road Safety Committee Recommendations
The issue was discussed in detail during a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee. After reviewing reports submitted by the police, transport department, and highway authorities, the committee concluded that the location had emerged as an accident-prone "black spot."
The reports indicated that many crashes occurred because vehicles attempted sudden U-turns or crossed the highway amid fast-moving traffic. To prevent further accidents, the committee recommended permanently closing the median opening, and the district administration approved and implemented the proposal.
Move Expected to Reduce Road Accidents
Officials believe the closure will improve traffic discipline on the highway and significantly reduce the risk of head-on collisions, side-impact crashes, and other serious accidents.
Road safety experts note that unauthorized or poorly designed median openings on highways are among the leading causes of accidents. Vehicles attempting to cross high-speed traffic create dangerous conflict points, making it essential to restrict such movements to designated and properly engineered locations.
Motorists Advised to Use Alternate Routes
The district administration has urged motorists not to attempt to use the closed crossing and instead follow the designated alternate routes and approved U-turns.
Barricades, warning signs, and traffic information boards have been installed at the site to inform drivers about the new traffic arrangement. Traffic police personnel will also remain deployed during the initial days to guide commuters and ensure smooth implementation of the new system.
Mixed Reactions from Local Residents
The decision has received mixed reactions from residents living near the area. Many welcomed the move, saying that if it helps reduce accidents and save lives, it is in the public interest.
Some commuters, however, pointed out that they may now have to travel a slightly longer distance to reach designated U-turn points. Even so, most acknowledged that road safety is far more important than the inconvenience of taking a longer route.
Administration Focuses on Road Safety
The district administration has been taking several initiatives to reduce road accidents, including identifying accident-prone black spots, installing traffic signs, implementing speed-control measures, removing encroachments, and conducting public awareness campaigns.
Officials emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility. While the administration continues to improve infrastructure, motorists must also follow traffic regulations to ensure safer roads for everyone.
Appeal to Follow Traffic Rules
Authorities have appealed to all road users to obey speed limits, avoid driving on the wrong side of the road, wear helmets and seat belts, and strictly follow traffic signs and signals.
Drivers have been advised to exercise extra caution while traveling on national highways, where high-speed traffic leaves little room for error and even a minor mistake can result in a serious accident.
Police to Monitor the New Traffic Arrangement
Police and administrative officials will closely monitor the new traffic system in the coming days. Any driver found attempting to bypass barricades or use the closed crossing illegally may face action under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The administration also stated that the effectiveness of the new arrangement will be reviewed periodically, and additional measures will be introduced if required to further improve road safety.
An Important Step Toward Safer Highways
Road safety experts believe that timely intervention at accident-prone locations is crucial for preventing fatal crashes. The closure of the NH-22 median opening is being viewed as an important initiative toward creating a safer and more efficient highway network.
The district administration has appealed to the public to cooperate with the new traffic regulations and follow road safety norms. Officials stressed that responsible driving and strict adherence to traffic rules are essential to reducing accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.
