New OPD Registration Counter at Mayaganj Hospital Remains Incomplete; Patient Woes Persist

BHAGALPUR: Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) in Bhagalpur, commonly known as 'Mayaganj Hospital', is once again in the headlines for its mismanagement. The construction of a 'new registration counter', initiated by the hospital administration to facilitate patients visiting the Outpatient Department (OPD), has remained incomplete even after months. This unfinished work has become a major source of distress for thousands of patients and their families visiting the hospital daily.

Mismanagement Due to Construction Delays

The OPD building at Mayaganj Hospital consistently faces a massive influx of patients. The new registration counter was conceptualized to streamline this heavy footfall and simplify the registration process. However, as time has passed, the project has been left in a state of limbo, becoming yet another example of stalled infrastructure.

Currently, the entire burden of registration falls on the existing, overloaded counters. Long queues begin forming at these old counters in the OPD hall as early as the crack of dawn. Due to the high number of patients and the limited capacity of these counters, scenes of jostling and chaotic crowds are an everyday occurrence.

Patients Suffer Amid Heat and Crowds

The situation has become agonizing for patients and their attendants. Long queues, stretching from the registration desk to the doctors' chambers, have become the norm. Critically ill patients, already battling exhaustion and the heat, are forced to stand in line for hours. Furthermore, with no adequate seating arrangements outside areas like the Ultrasound unit, X-ray department, and pathology center, patients are forced to wait in extreme discomfort, often exposed to the harsh elements.

To compound these issues, frequent technical glitches, such as server downtimes, often bring the registration process to a complete standstill for hours, further exacerbating the misery of the patients.

Empty Promises by the Administration

While the hospital management has issued instructions from time to time to improve the system, there has been no tangible change on the ground. Despite directives from the Deputy Superintendent regarding inspections and queue management, the plight of the patients remains largely unaddressed. Patients and their families are now demanding that the administration immediately complete the construction of the new counter to organize the registration process and provide relief from this nightmarish experience.

Dilapidated State of Infrastructure

It is not just the registration counter; the entire structure of Mayaganj Hospital is grappling with severe challenges. Recent reports have highlighted water leaking from the dilapidated ceilings during rains, leaving patients feeling unsafe even while lying in their hospital beds. The combination of poor maintenance of older buildings and delays in new construction projects has severely hampered the hospital's overall operational efficiency.

Mayaganj Hospital is a premier medical institution in Bihar, drawing patients from several neighboring districts who come seeking hope and healing. However, the lack of basic amenities and stalled projects are casting a shadow of doubt on the institution's reputation. If the new registration counter is not made operational promptly, the crisis in the OPD is likely to deepen.

The question remains: will the district administration and the Health Department take meaningful steps to resolve these fundamental issues and alleviate the suffering of the patients?
