National Seminar on 'Kabir Literature' at Mahatma Gandhi College: Kabir’s Philosophy Declared Essential for the Modern Era

Mahatma Gandhi College: A one-day national seminar on the topic "Kabir Literature: Yugbodh and Relevance" (Understanding the Era and Relevance) was organized today in the grand auditorium of Mahatma Gandhi College. Literary figures, researchers, and academicians from across the country participated in this seminar. The objective of the program was to connect the revolutionary thoughts of Saint Kabir and the philosophical depth of his poetry with the current generation.

Inauguration and Lighting of the Lamp

The seminar began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the chief guest and other dignitaries. Welcoming the guests, the College Principal stated that Kabir was not just a poet but an epoch-maker, whose ideas serve as a guiding force for society even centuries later.

Keynote Address: Kabir as a Great Philosopher

Renowned academician and litterateur Prof. Umesh Kumar, present as the chief guest, highlighted Kabir as a great philosopher. He stated:

"Kabir's philosophical vision is extremely comprehensive. The God he envisioned was beyond the boundaries of temples and mosques. He considered reason, conscience, and experience as the basis of knowledge. Today, when society is divided in the name of caste and religion, Kabir’s message of the unity of 'Ram' and 'Rahim' holds the power to bind us together."

Prof. Kumar shed light on the depth hidden within the brevity of Kabir’s 'Sadhukkadi' language and his couplets (Dohas). He explained how Kabir directly attacked the societal ills of his time through his verses.

Dr. Hari Narayan Singh’s Analysis: The Unique Personality of Kabir

The second keynote speaker of the seminar, Dr. Hari Narayan Singh, discussing Kabir's unique personality, noted that he was fearless and outspoken. He said:

Kabir as a Social Reformer: Dr. Singh explained that Kabir opposed social pretenses and hypocrisy without any sugar-coating. He remarked, "Kabir was not just a poet of devotion; he was a social reformer who placed human values above religion."

Unique Style: Dr. Singh mentioned that the intimacy found in Kabir's language is rare. Describing Kabir as a 'People's Poet' (Jan-Kavi), he noted that Kabir’s vocabulary was derived from the colloquial language of the common man, which touches the heart directly.

Highlights: Diverse Dimensions of Kabir’s Literature

During the day-long session, scholars expressed their views on various facets of Kabir literature:

Kabir and Spirituality: Speakers discussed how Kabir paved the way for 'Sahaj Sadhana' (natural practice) by harmonizing Yoga, Devotion (Bhakti), and Knowledge (Gyan).

Philosophy of Humanity: The seminar emphasized that the core objective of Kabir's poetry was 'humanity.' For him, 'serving humanity' was the highest form of worship.

Kabir in the Modern Era: Research students presented papers on how relevant Kabir's spirit of "Togetherness and Respect for All" is in today's technological age.

Participation of Researchers

Research scholars from the Hindi Department of Mahatma Gandhi College also presented their research papers on Kabir. They analyzed Kabir’s couplets in a modern context and explained how Kabir’s literature continues to inspire us to stay away from religious fanaticism today.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by a senior professor of the college. He stated that this seminar was an effort not to limit Kabir's ideas to bookish knowledge, but to encourage incorporating them into practical life.
