Municipal Corporation Employees Launch Indefinite Strike Over Three Core Demands; Angry Procession Taken Out on Eve of Strike, City Services Disrupted
Bhagalpur, Special Correspondent: Administrative and local body systems in Silk City Bhagalpur are appearing to be completely derailed these days. To enforce their long-pending and legitimate demands, all permanent, contractual, and outsourced employees of the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation have finally taken the path of agitation. At the call of the Bihar Local Bodies Employees Federation and the Bihar State Local Bodies Employees Federation Joint Struggle Front, municipal corporation employees have launched an indefinite (indefinite-duration) total strike. Just a day prior to the strike, workers took out a massive and aggressive torch/protest procession through the city, fiercely venting their anger against the government and the municipal administration. Due to this strike, the city's cleanliness, water supply, and other civic services have begun to be severely affected.
Vigorous Procession Taken Out on the Eve of the Strike, Slogans Echo
Before going on an indefinite strike, municipal workers left no stone unturned in demonstrating their solidarity and strength:
Hundreds of Employees Hit the Streets: On the eve of the strike, an angry procession was taken out from the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation premises. Carrying banners and posters and raising anti-government slogans, hundreds of sanitation workers, office clerks, and other municipal staff were seen marching on the streets.
Roar Against Exploitation: During the procession, employee leaders stated in explicit terms that the administration is continuously ignoring their demands, forcing them to take this stern step. The entire area echoed with the slogans of the workers during the demonstration.

The primary struggle of the workers is to get their three main and fundamental demands fulfilled by the governing administration:
Regularization and Complete Job Security: Contractual and daily-wage workers who have been providing their services to the corporation for years should be regularized and their job security ensured.
Termination of Contract and Outsourcing System: The contract system operating in municipal works, under which laborers are economically exploited, should be completely abolished.
Salary Hike and Timely Promotion: Amidst this era of inflation, the salary scale of employees should be hiked, and their promotion processes completed on time in accordance with rules.
City Management Derailed Due to Strike, General Public Distressed
The indefinite strike by the municipal corporation employees has had a direct and severe impact on the daily operations of the Silk City:
Cleanliness System Halted: The lifting of garbage from dozens of wards across the city has completely stopped. Piles of garbage have started accumulating along lanes and streets, raising the threat of disease outbreaks.
Water Supply and Street Light Issues: With employees of the waterworks department on strike, drinking water supply has been disrupted in several areas. Additionally, general citizens visiting for office work, trade licenses, building plan approvals, and birth-death certificates are forced to return disappointed.
