Multi-Crore Skywalk Awaits Inauguration, Remains Inaccessible to Public

Muzaffarpur: The state-of-the-art skywalk in Muzaffarpur, built at the cost of crores of rupees to facilitate pedestrians and ease traffic congestion, has turned into a "white elephant." Even though construction was completed more than a month and a half ago, it has not yet been opened for public use. Awaiting inauguration, this project is not only exposing administrative lethargy but has also become a source of trouble for commuters.

Construction Debris Blocks the Path

The public is expressing deep frustration over the delay in opening the facility. Construction materials and debris remain scattered along the approach paths and stairs of the skywalk. Piles of iron rods, bricks, stones, and cement bags are strewn about, making it extremely difficult for pedestrians—especially children and the elderly—to move through the area.

An Inconvenience Instead of a Facility

The skywalk was intended to provide safety for pedestrians crossing the road and to reduce the traffic jams in one of the city's busiest areas. However, as it currently stands, pedestrians are forced to cross the road underneath it, directly risking accidents.

Local traders and passersby say, "If the construction is complete, what is the justification for keeping it closed? If the inauguration is pending, at least the construction debris should have been cleared to make the path accessible." They allege that due to departmental negligence, the public is facing harassment instead of receiving the intended benefits.

The Stance of Officials

When attempts were made to contact the relevant departmental officials regarding this matter, they cited "technical formalities" and the wait for a "high-level inauguration" as reasons for the delay. According to sources, some minor finishing works and safety audits are still pending, which is why it is currently considered unsafe for public use.

However, a pertinent question arises: if the construction was nearing completion, why couldn't these minor hurdles be resolved within the last six weeks?

The Road Ahead

This skywalk represents a major milestone for Muzaffarpur’s modern infrastructure. If it is not opened soon, it will not only result in a waste of public funds, but the construction materials left in the open may also deteriorate over time.

City residents are now urging the district administration to clear the debris immediately and open the skywalk for the public without waiting for elaborate political ceremonies. The people of Muzaffarpur want this multi-crore project to be more than just a paper plan; they want it to fulfill its purpose of making their daily commute easier and safer.
