Massive Crowds Throng Kahalgaon and Bateshwarsthan, Devotees Offer Holy Water After a Ritual Dip in the Uttarvahini Ganga

In Sanatan Dharma, Jyeshtha Purnima holds a very distinct and highly sacred significance. On this auspicious occasion, an unprecedented wave of devotion swept across the famous religious destinations of Bhagalpur district—Kahalgaon and the historic Bateshwarsthan. From the early hours of the morning, massive crowds of devotees gathered along the banks of the holy Uttarvahini Ganga River. Thousands of devotees coming from far and wide took a ritual dip in the sacred river and offered prayers to the Sun God, seeking happiness, peace, and prosperity.

On this holy day, a grand water offering (Jalabhishek) was performed on the Shiva Lingam of Baba Bateshwarnath at Bateshwarsthan, accompanied by a vibrant traditional fair organized across the premises. Simultaneously, in Kahalgaon, devotees swarmed various Ganga ghats and temples to perform rituals, prayers, and charities. To ensure safety and seamless management, airtight security and utility arrangements were put in place by the local administration.

Chants of 'Har Har Gange' Echo Across the Ghats Since Dawn

The sacred bathing rituals for Jyeshtha Purnima commenced well before sunrise, during the auspicious Brahma Muhurta. Devotees arrived in massive numbers at Kahalgaon and Bateshwarsthan, drawing not just from various districts of Bihar but also from the neighboring states of Jharkhand and West Bengal.

The Inflow of Devotees in Kahalgaon:

There was absolutely no room to move at Kahalgaon’s prominent ghats, including Teen Pahar Ghat, Sati Ghat, and VIP Ghat. The air resonated with high-spirited chants of 'Har Har Gange' and 'Jai Baba Bholenath.' After finishing their holy bath, devotees sought blessings and completed ritual pledges (Sankalp) through priests stationed at the ghats, donating sesame seeds, jaggery, clothes, and grains according to their financial capacities. According to religious beliefs, taking a holy dip and donating on Jyeshtha Purnima rids individuals of their miseries and blesses them with everlasting virtues (Akshaya Punya).

Bateshwarsthan: Divine Water Offerings and a Vibrant Traditional Fair

The atmosphere was nothing short of magical at Bateshwarsthan, a place of immense historical and archaeological prominence located just a short distance from Kahalgaon. At this unique spot, the Ganga River flows northward (Uttarvahini), a phenomenon considered exceptionally sacred in Hindu scriptures.

 Key Attractions at Bateshwarsthan:

The Grand Maha-Jalabhishek: Carrying holy water fetched from the Uttarvahini Ganga, devotees stood in long, disciplined queues to enter the sanctum sanctorum of Baba Bateshwarnath, where they offered water, bael leaves, cannabis (bhang), datura, and milk to the Shiva Lingam.

Vibrant Fair Organized: A traditional grand fair was set up across and around the Bateshwarsthan complex to celebrate the Purnima. Immense crowds swarmed stalls selling children's toys, home decor items, and traditional sweets like Khaja and Jalebi.

Confluence of Sages: This special date also witnessed a gathering of numerous ascetics and sages inside the caves and ashrams of Bateshwarsthan, turning the entire environment profoundly spiritual with continuous devotional songs (Bhajan-Kirtan).

Crowd and Fair Management: At a Glance

The turnout on this year's Jyeshtha Purnima was significantly higher than in the past few years. To control the swelling crowds, the local administration and temple committees worked hand-in-hand.

 Security Layout and Administrative Vigilance

Given the massive influx of people, the sub-divisional administration and local police remained highly alert. Elaborate security systems were implemented across the vulnerable ghats of Kahalgaon and Bateshwarsthan.

Barricading the Danger Zones: To prevent any untoward drowning incidents in the deep waters of the Ganga, bamboo barricades were erected inside the river. Red cloth indicators were clearly used to map out the 'Danger Zones.'

Divers and SDRF Guarding: To handle any unforeseen water emergencies, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) alongside local divers continuously patrolled the river channels on motorboats.

CCTV and Watch Towers: To keep pickpockets and anti-social elements at bay, police personnel in plain clothes were stationed across the primary fair grounds and temple corridors, supplemented by active monitoring from watchtowers.

According to prominent priests and scholars, Jyeshtha Purnima also marks the culmination of the famous 'Vat Savitri Vrat' across several regions. This specific day is dedicated to worshipping Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi alongside the God of Gods, Lord Shiva. Bateshwarsthan also shares an ancient connection with the era of the historic Vikramshila University, which significantly heightens the spiritual aura of this location. It is widely believed that water offerings made here promptly fulfill the deepest wishes of devotees.

As evening approached, a visually stunning Ganga Aarti was organized across the river banks, illuminating the shores of the Uttarvahini Ganga with the radiant light of hundreds of earthen lamps.
