Major Step Regarding Women's and Student Safety in Bihar: 'Police Didi' to Now Patrol on Scooties Near Schools, Colleges, and Coaching Institutes; 1,500 New Scooties Being Procured Statewide
Bhagalpur/Patna, Special Correspondent: In a highly innovative initiative by the state government and police headquarters to thoroughly tighten the security of women and female students across Bihar and crack down on eve-teasers and miscreants lingering around educational institutions, 'Police Didi' teams will now be deployed near schools, colleges, coaching institutes, women's hostels, and major markets. Anyone passing lewd remarks or harassing women or female students on the streets will now face strict, immediate action from 'Police Didi'. To give momentum to this scheme, 1,500 new scooties are being specifically procured for women police personnel statewide, enabling them to patrol swiftly even through narrow alleys and crowded areas.
What is the 'Police Didi' Initiative and Its Blueprint?
Under the Bihar Police's zero-tolerance policy toward crimes against women, the 'Police Didi' campaign is being reinforced. Following the lines of the previously formed 'Sherni Dal' and 'Abhaya Brigade', this new system is now being implemented on the ground with the active participation of women police personnel.
Modern Scooties for Mobility: State-of-the-art vehicles are being provided to 'Police Didi' teams to conduct continuous patrols in their assigned areas. Out of the total 1,500 scooties being procured, 1,000 are petrol-driven and 500 are electric scooties (EVs), ensuring eco-friendly and uninterrupted patrolling.
Deployment of Selected and Experienced Women Force: As per directives from the police headquarters, only female constables and officers who have completed at least five years of service in the police force will be deployed as 'Police Didi'. This will enable them to deal with antisocial elements with greater vigilance and maturity.
Where Will They Be Deployed? Educational Institutions and Sensitive Hotspots
It is frequently observed that miscreants and Romeos loiter around girls' schools, women's colleges, and major coaching hubs, creating an environment of insecurity among female students and their guardians. Keeping this in mind, special routes and hotspots have been designated for the 'Police Didi' teams:
School, College, and Coaching Zones: Regular patrols will be conducted near coaching institutes and girls' schools in Bhagalpur's SM College Road, Barari, and Jogsar areas, as well as near major educational campuses in other districts.
Public Places and Markets: These teams will also maintain a presence in both plainclothes and uniforms at Sandis Compound or other large parks, markets, and women-dominated public spaces to prevent any untoward incidents before they occur.
Curbing Mobile and Purse Snatching: These teams will maintain a close watch on pickpockets and snatchers who target female students on the streets.
Awareness and Self-Defense Training
'Police Didi' will not be restricted merely to patrolling; they will also establish direct dialogue with female students inside educational institutions:
Information on Legal Rights: Special sessions will be organized in schools and colleges to educate female students about cybercrime, human trafficking, social media-related offenses, and their legal rights.
Promotion of Dial 112: Female students and their guardians will be encouraged to utilize the 'Dial 112' service for immediate assistance during emergencies.
Self-Defense Training: Students will be taught basic self-defense techniques to handle emergency situations independently, thereby boosting their confidence.
Strict Action Against Perpetrators
The police headquarters and regional officers (such as Range IGs and District SPs) have made it clear that hoodlums harassing female students or women will under no circumstances be spared. Upon being apprehended, rowdy youths will face immediate legal action and imprisonment. If any minor is repeatedly found involved in such acts, strict legal procedures will be adopted by preparing a social investigation report under Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) rules.
