Major Roads to Be Expanded to 60 Metres; Rapid Rail, Smart Infrastructure to Transform Patna
Patna: In a major step toward the planned expansion of Bihar’s capital and to accommodate its growing population, the master plan for the Pataliputra Satellite Township has been unveiled. According to Kamaljit Kumar Sharma, Town Planner in the Urban Development and Housing Department, the ambitious project will follow a modern urban development model. Under the plan, State Highway-1 (SH-1), National Highway-31 (NH-31), National Highway-431 (NH-431), and National Highway-131G (NH-131G) will be widened to 60 metres. The project also includes a Rapid Rail corridor, wide roads, green spaces, modern residential sectors, commercial hubs, and state-of-the-art civic infrastructure.
The township is expected to play a crucial role in easing traffic congestion, supporting balanced urban growth, and reshaping the future of the Patna metropolitan region. Urban planning experts believe the project could significantly transform the city's infrastructure over the coming decades.
Master Plan Designed for Future Growth
According to the Urban Development Department, the Pataliputra Satellite Township has been planned with the long-term needs of the capital in mind. With Patna experiencing rapid population growth, rising vehicle ownership, and increasing demand for housing, the government aims to develop a well-planned satellite city that can accommodate future expansion.
The township will include residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, and recreational zones, ensuring that residents have access to essential services within a well-organized urban environment.
Major Roads to Be Widened to 60 Metres
One of the most significant features of the master plan is the expansion of key transport corridors. Under the proposal, SH-1, NH-31, NH-431, and NH-131G will each be developed as 60-metre-wide roads.
The wider roads are expected to handle future traffic demand more efficiently, reduce travel time, improve road safety, and strengthen connectivity between different parts of the city and surrounding regions.
Rapid Rail to Become a Key Highlight
A major attraction of the project is the proposed Rapid Rail corridor, which will provide fast, safe, and efficient public transportation between Patna and nearby areas.
Urban transport experts believe the Rapid Rail system will reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion, shorten commuting time, and become an important part of the region’s future transportation network.
Development on the Lines of a Smart City
The Pataliputra Satellite Township will be developed using modern smart city principles. The plan includes intelligent traffic management systems, underground power infrastructure, smart street lighting, CCTV surveillance, high-speed internet connectivity, rainwater harvesting systems, and advanced sewerage networks.
The government also plans to integrate public services through digital platforms, making civic services more accessible and efficient for residents.
Strong Focus on Green and Sustainable Development
Environmental sustainability has been given high priority in the master plan. Large parks, green belts, urban forests, cycling tracks, pedestrian pathways, and open public spaces will be developed throughout the township.
The project also includes rainwater harvesting, water conservation, solid waste management, and pollution control measures to promote environmentally sustainable urban development.
Modern Residential and Commercial Zones
The township will feature modern residential sectors designed for different income groups, including affordable housing, multi-storey apartments, plotted developments, and mixed-use neighborhoods.
Large commercial complexes, office spaces, IT parks, shopping centres, hotels, and entertainment hubs will also be developed to promote business activities and create employment opportunities.
Expansion of Education and Healthcare Facilities
Land has been earmarked for schools, colleges, universities, technical institutes, research centres, and skill development institutions to support future educational needs.
The healthcare infrastructure will include multi-specialty hospitals, medical centres, primary health facilities, and emergency care services, ensuring high-quality healthcare for residents within the township.
Boost to Employment and Investment
The large-scale urban development project is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities. During construction, engineers, architects, technicians, construction workers, and other professionals will benefit from increased job opportunities.
After completion, the township is expected to attract investment in real estate, information technology, retail, tourism, and small and medium enterprises, contributing to Bihar’s economic growth.
Relief from Traffic Congestion
Traffic congestion has long been one of Patna’s biggest urban challenges. The combination of wider roads, Rapid Rail connectivity, improved public transportation, and scientific traffic management is expected to significantly reduce congestion across the city.
Improved mobility will save commuters time, reduce fuel consumption, and contribute to lower pollution levels.
A New Direction for Regional Development
The Pataliputra Satellite Township is expected to stimulate development beyond Patna itself. Better transportation links will encourage the establishment of new industrial zones, educational institutions, and commercial centres in surrounding areas.
The project is also expected to increase land values, attract new residential developments, and strengthen the regional economy through higher investment and business activity.
Part of the Government’s Long-Term Urban Development Strategy
According to the Urban Development Department, the township is a key component of the Bihar government's long-term urban planning strategy. The objective is to transform Patna into a modern, future-ready city equipped with world-class infrastructure and public services.
The master plan will be implemented in phases, with close coordination among various government departments to ensure timely completion of the project.
The Pataliputra Satellite Township Master Plan represents a landmark initiative in the urban transformation of Bihar’s capital. With 60-metre-wide highways, a Rapid Rail corridor, smart infrastructure, green spaces, and modern residential and commercial developments, the project has the potential to reshape Patna into a well-planned, sustainable, and globally competitive city. If implemented on schedule, it is expected to ease traffic congestion, address housing demands, generate employment, attract investment, boost trade, and accelerate regional economic growth. Over the coming years, the Pataliputra Satellite Township could emerge as one of Bihar’s most significant examples of modern urban development.
