JLNMCH to Be Notified as Level-1 or Level-2 Trauma Center; Preparations Intensify to Save Lives Under 'Golden Hour' for Road Accidents on National Highways

Bhagalpur, Chief Correspondent: Extremely comforting and major news is emerging for travelers on National Highways across the country and victims severely injured in road accidents. The Bihar Government has taken a revolutionary step to curb the statistics of deaths caused by road accidents and to provide prompt and high-level medical assistance to patients during the crucial initial hours following an accident—known as the 'Golden Hour'. Under this initiative, the process of notifying 29 major hospitals and medical colleges across the state, including Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH / Mayaganj Hospital) in Bhagalpur, as 'Level-1' or 'Level-2' trauma centers has been set into motion.

With this long-awaited initiative taking concrete shape, millions of people across Bhagalpur, the entire Anga region, and eastern Bihar are expected to receive a new lease of life in the realm of emergency medical care.

What Is the 'Golden Hour' and Why Was a Trauma Center Needed?

According to road safety experts and medical science, the first hour after any severe road accident—the 'Golden Hour'—is the most decisive factor in saving a patient's life. If the injured person receives advanced medical facilities during this window, such as a neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon, state-of-the-art ventilators, digital CT scans, and an immediate Operation Theater (OT), the lives of most critical patients can be saved.

However, due to a lack of resources and specialized trauma centers until now, victims of road accidents in Bhagalpur and surrounding areas could not get timely high-level treatment. Thousands of critical road accident patients arrive at Mayaganj Hospital every year, many of whom lose their lives due to the unavailability of timely neuro or advanced surgeries, or are forcibly referred to Patna, Siliguri, or Kolkata. The implementation of this new administrative scheme will curb this calamity to a large extent.

Mayaganj Hospital (JLNMCH) Included Among 29 State Hospitals

Under this special scheme formulated by the Health Department of the Government of Bihar, a total of 29 major hospitals across the state have been selected, situated close to National Highways (NH) and experiencing high patient influx. Since Bhagalpur district is connected to major national highways and busy thoroughfares with a continuously rising count of road accidents, JLNMCH has been placed at the center of this scheme.

According to administrative sources, upgrading the medical infrastructure available at JLNMCH or its affiliated super-specialty block to prepare it in accordance with 'Level-1' or 'Level-2' standards will ensure that even the most critical trauma cases (severe head injuries, internal bleeding, multi-organ fractures, etc.) can be successfully treated right here.

Detailed Reports Sought from Hospitals, Standards Being Fixed

Before issuing the official notification designating it as a Level-1 or Level-2 trauma center, the Health Department has demanded a complete breakdown of basic facilities and resources from the JLNMCH management. The hospital administration has been directed to submit a detailed report via email, focusing primarily on the following points:

JLNMCH in Bhagalpur serves as a primary refuge not only for district residents but also for patients from neighboring districts like Banka, Katihar, Purnia, Khagaria, Munger, and Godda and Deoghar in Jharkhand. Once this hospital begins functioning as a duly notified high-level trauma center, victims of road accidents will no longer need to run around expensive private hospitals. Even people from poor and helpless families will be able to avail of cutting-edge medical facilities at minimal expense.

This drive to notify JLNMCH Bhagalpur as a Level-1 or Level-2 trauma center is a historic step by the Bihar Government towards strengthening road safety and health services. If prompt, ground-level implementation follows the completion of related formalities and reporting procedures, it will achieve phenomenal success in saving precious lives during road accidents on National Highways in and around Bhagalpur in the coming days
