Heavy Rainfall Since Early Monday Morning Disrupts Daily Life, Waterlogging on Roads
Bhagalpur: For the residents of Bhagalpur, who have been grappling with humidity and heat for a long time, Monday morning brought a major relief. A spell of heavy rain began in the district early this morning, which not only led to a drop in temperature but also changed the mood of the city. While this torrential rain has provided respite from the sweltering heat, it has once again brought the old issues of poor drainage to the forefront.
Rainfall Began in the Early Hours
The rain, which started around 3:00 AM on Monday, engulfed the entire district in no time. Due to the heavy, intermittent downpour until 8:00 AM, roads were completely flooded. Traffic movement was slow due to waterlogging in busy areas such as Station Chowk, Ghantaghar, Khalifabagh Chowk, and Katchery Road. Pedestrians were forced to wade through knee-deep water, causing significant difficulties for school children and office-goers.
Drop in Temperature, Farmers Rejoice
According to weather department data, a drop of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius has been recorded in the maximum temperature due to this rainfall. For people suffering from humid heat, it was a morning of relief. On the other hand, for this agriculture-dependent district, this rain is like a boon. Agricultural scientists believe that this monsoon activity is highly favorable for paddy transplantation. Farmers who were previously worried about sowing due to the lack of rain are now seen smiling.
The Reality of Poor Drainage
As pleasant as the rain was, the reality of the city's drainage system was equally bitter. Due to the lack of solid arrangements for drainage in the low-lying areas of the city, water reached the doorsteps of many homes. Despite claims of cleaning by the Municipal Corporation, drain water overflowed onto the roads, increasing the risk of infection.
Due to encroachments and clogged drains, the speed of water drainage was hindered, causing the traffic system to collapse severely. Several small vehicles were seen stalled after getting stuck in the water on major city roads, leading to traffic jams.
District Administration on 'Alert Mode'
In view of the continuous rain, the district administration has become fully alert. The District Magistrate has instructed all relevant officials to ensure water drainage from waterlogged areas through pump sets. The Municipal Corporation team has been asked to remain deployed in the field to deal with emergency situations.
The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast for intermittent moderate to heavy rain in Bhagalpur and surrounding areas for the next 24 to 48 hours. The administration has also appealed to the general public to avoid going near dilapidated buildings or electric poles. While this morning in Bhagalpur may have been drenched in rain, it has also become a major test for the administrative system.
