Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms and Lightning Alert for Several Districts on July 2; Residents Advised to Stay Cautious
Patna: The southwest monsoon is becoming increasingly active across Bihar, bringing much-needed relief from the intense heat, humidity, and hot winds that have affected the state over the past several days. According to the latest weather bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Patna, weather conditions are expected to change significantly on July 2, with forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions during this period.
As per the forecast, districts in the Seemanchal and Mithilanchal regions—including Katihar, Madhubani, Purnia, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, and West Champaran—are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Moderate to heavy showers are also expected in nearby districts. The department has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 30 to 40 km/h may occur in many areas.
Meteorologists say that continuous moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal has strengthened the monsoon system over Bihar. This is expected to result in widespread rainfall across the state over the next 24 to 48 hours. The increased monsoon activity is also likely to bring down daytime temperatures, offering relief from the scorching heat that has pushed maximum temperatures to 38–40 degrees Celsius in several districts over the past week.
According to weather experts, northern and eastern parts of Bihar are expected to receive the highest amount of rainfall during this spell. Authorities are also closely monitoring river water levels, particularly in the Seemanchal and Mithilanchal regions. Continuous heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, prompting district administrations to remain on alert and prepare for any emergency situation.
The Meteorological Department has also issued an advisory for farmers. Those in districts likely to experience heavy rainfall have been advised to postpone the application of fertilizers and pesticides until the weather improves. However, the expected rainfall is likely to benefit paddy cultivation by providing adequate moisture for transplantation. Farmers have also been urged to avoid working in open fields during thunderstorms and lightning activity.
Residents have been advised to avoid standing under trees, near electric poles, or in open fields during thunderstorms. People should stay indoors whenever possible and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions. Motorists are also advised to drive carefully, as strong winds and reduced visibility due to heavy rain may create hazardous road conditions.
The State Disaster Management Department has appealed to citizens to follow official weather advisories and safety guidelines. During lightning activity, people should immediately move to a safe shelter and avoid using mobile phones or electrical appliances in open areas. Authorities have also recommended disconnecting unnecessary electrical equipment during severe storms as a precautionary measure.
Urban local bodies have been instructed to ensure that drainage systems are functioning properly to minimize waterlogging in cities and towns. In rural areas, local administrations have been directed to monitor vulnerable locations and keep emergency response teams ready for any rescue or relief operations if required.
Weather experts believe that the monsoon is likely to remain active across most parts of Bihar during the first week of July, which will support agricultural activities and improve water availability. However, intermittent spells of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to continue, making it important for residents to stay updated with official weather forecasts.
Overall, July 2 is expected to bring a major change in Bihar's weather, with heavy rain, gusty winds, thunderstorms, and lightning forecast for several districts. While the rainfall is expected to provide significant relief from the prolonged heat and humidity, authorities have urged people to remain cautious and follow all safety advisories to minimize the risk of weather-related incidents
