Grand Launch of 'Pre-Pregnancy Care' Project Jointly by District Health Society and Jhpiego; A Historic Step Toward Laying the Foundation for Safe Motherhood and a Healthy Infant
Begusarai, Special Correspondent: Taking a revolutionary initiative in the field of maternal and child health, the 'Pre-Pregnancy Care' Project has been formally launched in Begusarai, an industrial and cultural hub of Bihar. Initiated through the collaborative efforts of the District Health Society and the international health organization 'Jhpiego', the primary objective of this ambitious project is to improve the health status of prospective parents even before conception, identify potential risks, and ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy. The program commenced in the gracious presence of the District Magistrate of Begusarai and prominent health officials, where speakers termed this scheme as a milestone toward reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates (MMR & IMR).
What is 'Pre-Pregnancy Care' and Why Was It Needed?
Generally, in our society, medical care and antenatal check-ups (ANC) for women are emphasized after pregnancy, but the concept of 'Pre-Pregnancy Care' goes a step further:
Preparation Prior to Conception: Under this project, special focus will be given to eligible couples who are planning to expand their families or become parents in the near future.
Timely Identification of Complications: Women often have hemoglobin deficiencies (anemia), thyroid issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, or other genetic conditions that they are unaware of before conceiving. This project provides an opportunity to address these gaps before conception, minimizing the risks of miscarriages, preterm births, or congenital disabilities.
Key Remarks by the District Magistrate and Health Officials
During the launch ceremony, several senior health department officials, including the District Magistrate and Civil Surgeon of Begusarai, were present:
Safety of Pregnant Women and Newborns is Top Priority: In his address, the District Magistrate stated that the primary objective of the government and the health department is to elevate the safe motherhood rate in the district to a higher level. He noted that when a woman is physically and mentally healthy even before conception, the upcoming generation will also be completely healthy and robust.
Need for Community-Level Awareness: Health officials emphasized that this scheme will not be limited to hospitals alone; rather, information will be disseminated to newlywed couples and eligible couples through grassroots workers such as ASHA workers, ANMs, and Anganwadi sevikas so they can fully benefit from this free healthcare service.
Healthcare Services Available to Eligible Couples Under the Project
Under this special project, eligible couples visiting health centers in the Begusarai district will receive the following phased health benefits:
Comprehensive Health Screening: Complete medical histories of the couples will be taken, and their blood pressure, blood sugar, hemoglobin levels, and other essential pathological tests will be conducted.
Nutritional Supplements and Folic Acid: Folic acid is vital for the development of the baby's brain and spinal cord during the early weeks of pregnancy. Women will be advised on its consumption and provided supplements even before conception.
Counseling and Lifestyle Improvements: Professional counseling will be provided to couples regarding a nutritious diet, stress management, yoga, and staying away from smoking or other intoxicating substances.
Checking Immunization Status: To prevent rubella and other infections, it will be ensured whether the woman's vaccinations are up to date.
Role of Jhpiego and Technical Support
The global health organization 'Jhpiego' is providing technical expertise and training to make this project successful:
Training of Doctors and Personnel: Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers deployed at Sadar Hospitals and Community Health Centers (CHCs) are being specially trained so they can assist couples with precision and sensitivity during pre-pregnancy counseling.
Digital Tracking and Monitoring: A database of eligible couples will be prepared under the project, allowing continuous tracking of their health progress and ensuring they receive necessary medical consultations at the right time.
The 'Pre-Pregnancy Care' project launched in collaboration with the Begusarai District Health Society and Jhpiego is the outcome of visionary thinking in the health sector. This initiative will not only gift mothers a safe delivery but will also prove to be a strong shield in combating malnutrition and congenital diseases. If this scheme is implemented with absolute dedication at the grassroots level, the Begusarai district will emerge as an inspiring model for the entire state in the days to come.
