He said his parents did everything possible to ensure he received proper treatment, but limited financial resources made the struggle even harder.

Along with his physical disability, Jhandu and his family had to endure severe financial hardship. He recalled that many people in the neighborhood mocked his family because of the expenses incurred on his treatment.

He Wanted to Change His Name
Jhandu Kumar revealed that there was a time when he wanted to change his name because he felt people laughed at him whenever they heard it.
With this intention, he visited the local block office to complete the legal formalities for changing his name in official documents.
However, the experience there turned out to be equally disappointing.
An Incident at the Block Office
He recalled that when officials at the block office asked for his name and he replied, "Jhandu Kumar," several staff members laughed.
Speaking about the incident, he said:
"The staff asked me what my name was. As soon as I said 'Jhandu,' everyone started laughing. At that moment, I didn't feel offended. I thought this had now become my identity, so I decided to accept it."
After that experience, he abandoned the idea of changing his name and chose to embrace it instead.
Choosing Sports as His Life's Mission
Despite physical challenges and financial hardships, Jhandu Kumar never gave up. He chose para powerlifting as his passion and dedicated himself to rigorous training.
