Flood Crisis Persists in Mahishi Block Even After Kosi River Water Levels Recede: Commuting in Low-Lying Areas Completely Paralyzed, Villagers Endure Severe Hardships; Plea for Assistance Made to Public Representatives and Administration
The devastation of floods in the Kosi and Seemanchal regions of Bihar brings a serious challenge to normal life every year. The Mahishi block of Saharsa district is currently grappling severely with floods and their aftermath. Although the encouraging news is that a gradual decline in the Kosi River's water level has been recorded over the past few days, the ground reality is that despite the river retreating slightly, flood troubles in the low-lying areas of Mahishi block refuse to subside. With water failing to drain completely from villages and residential settlements, people's struggles remain unchanged. Trapped amidst widespread water and mud, villagers are forced to live a hellish life, and normal activities have come to a complete standstill.
Current Situation in Low-Lying Areas of Mahishi and Waterlogging Crisis
Several villages and hamlets in Mahishi block are geographically situated in low-lying parts. When the Kosi River's water level was at its peak, water surged rapidly into these zones. Even though the main stream's water level is now dropping, water remains trapped here in the absence of a proper natural drainage system.
Submerged Settlements: Around two to three feet of water still stands in the lanes and around homes in several villages of the block. Due to water stagnation over a prolonged period, foul odors have started emanating from it, making it difficult for local residents to even breathe.
Severe Commuting Problems: With water surrounding villages from all directions, connectivity with main roads has been severed. The only remaining lifeline for villagers to commute is small boats. However, due to an inadequate number of boats, people face immense difficulties in carrying out daily chores, visiting markets, or sending children to school.
Normal Life Disrupted: Essential Services and Work Impacted
This prolonged spell of floods has completely derailed normal life in Mahishi.
Plight of Farmers and Livestock Keepers: With fields inundated, farmers' kharif crops, particularly paddy, have been completely ruined. Furthermore, livestock keepers face a massive crisis regarding fodder for their domestic animals. In the absence of dry fodder, cattle are forced to remain hungry.
Unemployment of Daily Wage Earners: Daily wage laborers and small shopkeepers have been rendered completely unemployed. With business activity suspended, arranging two square meals for their families has become a major challenge.
Role of Mukhia and Local Representatives Along with Villagers' Plea
Amidst this crisis, efforts are being made locally by Mukhias and other public representatives to manage the situation, but extensive assistance at the administrative level is still urgently required.
Demand for Relief Materials: Villagers in affected areas have demanded through the Mukhia and panchayat representatives that dry ration, polythene sheets, and pure drinking water be distributed on a war footing.
Threat of Communicable Diseases: Mosquito infestations have gone out of control due to rotting water. Villagers are appealing to the health department to immediately dispatch mobile medical teams and spray bleaching powder to prevent epidemics like malaria, diarrhea, and skin diseases.
The persistence of floodwaters in Mahishi block despite receding Kosi River water levels proves that disaster management work must extend not only during a flood but up to post-flood rehabilitation. People in the low-lying areas of Mahishi are currently undergoing immense mental and financial pressure. The administration and concerned departments must spring into action immediately and accelerate relief and rescue operations to deliver these suffering villagers from this crisis.
