Do Not Take Milk Immediately After Iron Tablets: Dr. Amita - Special Anemia Screening Camp Organized for Women by Rotary Gaya City

A highly commendable and significant step has been taken in the Gaya district of Bihar to improve the health and nutritional status of women. Under the auspices of Rotary Gaya City, a special Anemia (blood deficiency) screening-cum-awareness camp was organized for women. Renowned physician Dr. Amita specially participated in this camp and provided valuable health-related advice to the women. During her address, Dr. Amita cautioned women with a very important medical tip: milk or dairy products should not be consumed immediately after taking iron tablets, as this prevents the proper absorption of iron in the body.

What is the Full Matter? (Organization of the Camp and the Problem of Anemia in Women)

In India, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, anemia (blood deficiency) remains a very common yet serious health issue among women and young girls. To help women overcome this issue and raise awareness among them, this health camp was organized by Rotary Gaya City.

Screening of a Large Number of Women: A large number of women from Gaya city and surrounding rural areas participated in the camp. Doctors and the medical team thoroughly examined the women's health, checking for symptoms of hemoglobin deficiency (anemia).

Emphasis on Nutrition and Diet: During the camp, doctors explained to women how they can overcome blood deficiency by including green leafy vegetables, jaggery, gram, pomegranates, and other nutritious items in their daily diet.

Dr. Amita's Key Advice: Iron Tablets and Milk Consumption

Addressing the women at the camp, Dr. Amita provided detailed information about the correct usage of iron pills. She stated that women often take iron pills prescribed by doctors but remain unaware of the correct methods of consumption:

Why the Combination of Iron and Milk is Harmful: Dr. Amita explained that milk is rich in calcium. When a person drinks milk or consumes dairy products immediately after taking an iron tablet, the calcium and iron undergo a chemical reaction, preventing the digestive system from fully absorbing the iron.

Calcium Reduces the Efficacy of Medicine: As a result, the body does not receive the full benefit for which the iron pill is consumed. Dr. Amita advised that iron tablets should always be taken with water or lemon water/orange juice (substances rich in vitamin C), as vitamin C accelerates iron absorption in the body.

Maintain a Time Gap: If a woman wishes to drink milk, she must maintain a gap of at least 2 to 3 hours between taking the iron pill and consuming milk.

Success of the Camp and Women's Response

Women participated enthusiastically in this anemia screening camp organized by Rotary Gaya City. After the screening, women found to have low hemoglobin levels were provided free iron and multivitamin tablets on the spot. They were also inspired to adopt a balanced diet. Expressing gratitude towards the Rotary Club and Dr. Amita, the women stated that such camps help them learn many essential health-related facts that they are generally unaware of.

This anemia screening camp organized by Rotary Gaya City in Gaya has proven to be a milestone toward improving women's health. The crucial information provided by Dr. Amita that "do not take milk immediately after iron tablets" is extremely useful for women. If women incorporate these minor medical precautions into their lives, they can easily rid themselves of a serious issue like anemia and lead a healthy life.
