Sultanganj (Bhagalpur): During the world-famous Shravani Mela, Sultanganj witnesses a massive influx of millions of Kanwariyas (pilgrims). For the pilgrims who collect water from the Uttarvahini Ganga Ghat and depart for Deoghar, every lane and path in the city becomes crucial. One such highly sensitive route is the 'Women's Hospital Lane.' This lane is a primary thoroughfare not only for Kanwariyas but also for the local population. However, currently, this lane stands on the brink of disaster. The boundary wall of this lane has become so dilapidated that it could crumble at any moment, posing a grave risk of a major catastrophe.
Crowd Pressure and the Risk of the Dilapidated Wall
During the Shravani Mela, there is hardly any space to move in this lane. Jathas (groups) of thousands of Kanwariyas pass through here day and night. In such conditions, the precarious state of the wall is like an invitation to a major disaster. Hospital management and local residents state that the bricks of the wall are coming loose and it has started tilting inwards. Due to strong winds or the pressure of heavy crowds, this wall could collapse at any moment.
A senior hospital official expressed his concern, stating, "We have informed the concerned department about this danger several times. The Mela has begun and the crowd pressure is increasing, but repair work has yet to commence."
Why is this path so important?
During the Shravani Mela in Sultanganj, the main roads are often gridlocked. Consequently, Kanwariyas use the Women’s Hospital Lane as a shortcut. This lane connects the Ganga Ghat to the main market and the roads leading toward the railway station.
Lack of Safety: Thousands of devotees pass under the wall every day. If this wall collapses, it could trigger a stampede and lead to significant loss of life and property.
Administrative Neglect: While the local administration is focusing on barricading and cleanliness, this dangerous deficiency in basic infrastructure is being ignored.

The hospital management states that they have written to higher authorities regarding the repair of the wall. They also clarified that since the hospital premises and the outer part of the wall are used for public thoroughfare, it is not possible to fund the repairs solely from the hospital's budget.
Local residents and shopkeepers stated, "The administration spends crores of rupees for the convenience of Kanwariyas, but is there no budget for repairing a single wall? If an accident happens tomorrow, who will be held responsible?" Residents have demanded that the administration install temporary protective barriers until the Shravani Mela concludes so that people keep their distance from the wall.
Questions on Administrative Accountability
The administrative apathy regarding the looming danger on this important route in Sultanganj has become a subject of discussion. Due to a lack of coordination between the Municipal Council and the Health Department, repair work remains stalled. When the Mela is at its peak, even a small amount of negligence can have severe consequences.
Urgent Measures: There is Still Time
To prevent an accident, the administration must immediately take the following steps:
Temporary Support: Until permanent repairs are made, the wall should be secured using scaffolding (bamboo poles).
Diversion: For the time being, the crowd of Kanwariyas should be diverted to a safer alternative route instead of using this lane.
Warning Boards: 'Danger' and 'Caution' boards should be installed at both ends of the lane so that passersby remain alert.
