Development Turns into 'Obstacle' as 5-Foot-High Drain Blocks Access for Residents
A construction project intended to improve urban development and drainage systems has become a source of immense hardship for local residents. In a densely populated area of the city, a drain currently under construction has been built approximately 5 feet above ground level. Since the completion of this segment, residents are finding it nearly impossible to enter or exit their homes.
The Root of the Problem: Flawed Planning
Local residents state that while they welcome improvements to the drainage system, the current execution is entirely unscientific. The drain is being constructed directly in front of homes along the roadside, reaching a height of about 5 feet.

Ramji Prasad, a local resident, shared his grievance: "We pleaded with the contractors and concerned officials multiple times to lower the height of the drain or build it at street level, but our requests fell on deaf ears. We are now forced to remain imprisoned in our own homes."
Similarly, Suman Devi, a homemaker, stated: "Returning home from the market has become like climbing a mountain. There is a constant fear of falling from this 5-foot height, especially at night. This isn't development; itâs a major hurdle in our daily lives."
Administrative Negligence?
Experts viewing this discrepancy suggest it is a case of gross negligence in technical planning. Typically, a drain is constructed along the slope of the road to ensure efficient water runoff. However, here, the drain has been elevated far above the road level.
Whether this is the result of faulty leveling or a contractor taking shortcuts for convenience remains a subject for investigation. If left in this state, the area might also face waterlogging during the monsoon season, as surface water will be unable to enter the elevated drain.
Security and Accessibility Concerns
This construction appears to be a direct violation of the principles of 'accessible infrastructure' and the residents' 'right to movement.'
Safety: Without proper barricading or access ramps, there is a high risk of accidents from the 5-foot drop.
Impact on Small Businesses: Local shopkeepers are also seeing their livelihoods suffer, as customers are unable to reach their stores.
