Darbhanga to Emerge as India’s Makhana Hub: ₹100 Million Centre of Excellence and ₹80 Million NBL Laboratory to Boost Research, Quality, and Farmer Income

Darbhanga News:
A major initiative has been launched to strengthen makhana (fox nuts) production and enhance farmers' incomes by developing Darbhanga into one of India's leading Makhana Hubs. As part of this ambitious plan, a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence will be established at an estimated cost of ₹100 million (₹10 crore), while an NBL (National Biological Laboratory) Laboratory will be set up with an investment of ₹80 million (₹8 crore).

Sharing the details of the project, Member of Parliament Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur said the new facilities would significantly improve research, quality testing, value addition, processing, and marketing of makhana and other aquatic agricultural products.

He noted that the Mithila region has long been recognized as one of India's largest producers of premium-quality makhana. Renowned for its taste and nutritional value, Mithila's makhana has gained popularity not only across India but also in international markets. The proposed infrastructure aims to further strengthen its global competitiveness through scientific research and modern technology.

Special Focus on Increasing Farmers' Income

Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur said the primary objective of the Centre of Excellence is to introduce makhana farmers to modern cultivation techniques, scientific farming methods, and advanced crop management practices.

He emphasized that improved production techniques, combined with better post-harvest management and market access, would enhance product quality, reduce production costs, and significantly increase farmers' earnings.

According to him, the growing domestic and international demand for makhana presents a tremendous opportunity for farmers. By equipping them with advanced technologies and scientific guidance, Mithila's makhana industry can achieve even greater success in global markets.

Centre of Excellence to Become a Hub for Research and Training

The proposed Centre of Excellence will focus on advanced research in makhana cultivation, development of improved varieties, disease management, water resource management, modern processing techniques, and capacity-building programs for farmers.

Agricultural scientists, researchers, and technical experts will regularly conduct training sessions to educate farmers about the latest innovations and best agricultural practices.

Experts believe the center will encourage scientific farming and ensure that farmers gain direct access to cutting-edge technologies capable of improving productivity and profitability.

₹80 Million NBL Laboratory to Strengthen Quality Standards

As part of the project, an NBL Laboratory costing approximately ₹80 million (₹8 crore) will also be established.

The laboratory will conduct quality testing, nutritional analysis, food safety assessments, and scientific research on makhana and other aquatic agricultural products. The facility is expected to ensure that products comply with national and international quality standards.

Quality certification through the laboratory will enhance consumer confidence and improve the acceptance of Mithila's agricultural products in domestic as well as international markets, creating greater opportunities for exports.

New Opportunities for Aquatic Agricultural Products

Dr. Thakur explained that the initiative is not limited to makhana alone. It will also promote the research, processing, value addition, and marketing of other aquatic agricultural products produced in the region.

He highlighted the vast potential of fisheries, water chestnuts, lotus-based products, and other aquatic resources in Mithila. Scientific support and technological advancements are expected to generate new employment opportunities while strengthening the rural economy.

New Prospects for Students and Researchers

The establishment of the Centre of Excellence and the NBL Laboratory will benefit not only farmers but also students, researchers, and professionals working in agriculture, food technology, biotechnology, and aquaculture.

The institutions are expected to provide opportunities for research projects, internships, technical training, and innovation-driven studies, allowing local youth to pursue advanced careers without leaving the region.

Modern Technology to Improve Global Competitiveness

Agricultural experts believe that adopting modern technologies will significantly improve both the quality and productivity of makhana cultivation.

Scientific processing, packaging, quality testing, and certification will enable producers to meet international standards, making Mithila's makhana more competitive in global markets.

Improved branding and quality assurance are also expected to increase farmers' profits while strengthening India's position in the global makhana industry.

Export Potential Expected to Grow

Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur stated that demand for Indian makhana continues to rise in overseas markets. He said strengthening quality control, packaging, and certification systems would substantially boost exports.

According to him, the proposed project will help organize the makhana industry more efficiently and facilitate the expansion of local products into international markets.

Boost to the Regional Economy

Economic experts believe the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and the NBL Laboratory will provide a major boost to the economy of the entire Mithila region.

Thousands of people engaged in makhana cultivation, processing, storage, packaging, transportation, and marketing are expected to benefit directly or indirectly. The project is also likely to attract private investment and encourage the growth of agro-based industries, generating additional employment opportunities.

Farmers Welcome the Initiative

The announcement has generated considerable enthusiasm among makhana farmers across the region. Many believe that access to scientific training, quality testing facilities, and stronger market linkages will significantly improve their incomes and reduce production-related challenges.

Farmers expressed hope that the project would be implemented without delay, allowing them to benefit from modern research and advanced agricultural infrastructure that has long been awaited.

A Significant Step Toward Agricultural Development

Experts describe the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and the NBL Laboratory in Darbhanga as more than just an infrastructure project. They believe it will usher in a new era of agricultural innovation, scientific research, rural development, and value-added production in the Mithila region.

If implemented as planned, Darbhanga has the potential to become one of India's leading centers for makhana research, cultivation, processing, and exports. The project is expected not only to improve the economic condition of farmers but also to strengthen Mithila's reputation as a globally recognized producer of high-quality makhana.
