Concern Mounts in Naugachia’s Diara and Plains; Administration on High Alert

Naugachia/Bhagalpur: With the arrival of July 2026, the threat of flooding has once again intensified in the coastal regions of the Ganga and Kosi rivers in Bihar. Due to torrential rains in the catchment areas of Nepal and the continuous discharge of water from the Kosi Barrage, a steady rise in water levels is being recorded in the plains and Diara (riverine/mid-river) areas of Naugachia and Bhagalpur. The rising river flow has caused significant anxiety among local residents, prompting the administration to issue an alert.

Increasing Pressure: The Current Situation

According to the latest data from the Flood Control Division in Naugachia, both the Ganga and Kosi rivers are in spate. Over the past 48 hours, a consistent rise in water levels has been observed at the Madarauni gauge site and near the Ismailpur-Bind Toli embankment. Although the department maintains that all embankments are currently safe and the water levels are below the danger mark, the water in sensitive areas like Chorhar has reached dangerously close to the embankments, becoming a primary cause for concern.

Challenges of the Diara Region

The Diara region of Naugachia, which is highly sensitive to flooding due to its geographical layout, is facing an increasingly critical situation:

Inundated Fields: As water spreads into low-lying areas and fields, paddy and other Kharif crops are on the verge of being submerged. Farmers fear the loss of their year-long hard work.

Fear of Displacement: Along with the rise in water levels, river erosion has also intensified. The pressure of the water is impacting the embankments in several locations, causing residents of riverine villages to begin migrating toward safer areas.

Shortage of Resources: Boats have become the only means of transportation in rural areas. Additionally, challenges regarding fodder for cattle and access to clean drinking water are beginning to emerge.

Administrative Preparations and Rescue Operations

The district administration appears fully prepared to deal with any untoward incidents. As part of pre-flood preparations, the following measures are being taken:

Constant Vigilance: Teams of engineers have been deployed 24/7 at sensitive spurs and embankments. Reports are being prepared for every centimeter of water rise.

Anti-Erosion Works: Sandbags are being used on a war footing to prevent erosion and ensure that no damage occurs to the embankments.

High Alert: Residents living in low-lying areas have been cautioned not to venture near the riverbanks. The administration has issued directives to ensure the availability of boats and relief camps for emergency situations.

The Challenge: Confluence of the Ganga and Kosi

The Naugachia region is particularly sensitive because it serves as the confluence point for the Kosi and Ganga rivers. When the water levels of both rivers rise simultaneously, water drainage slows down, leading to severe waterlogging. Experts believe that during this monsoon period, the fluctuation in water levels will depend entirely on rainfall in Nepal and the volume of water released from the barrage.

The next few days are extremely critical for the Diara regions of Naugachia and Bhagalpur. The administration is closely monitoring the situation, and the public has been advised to remain alert. While the situation is currently under control, the rising temperament of the rivers signals the possibility of a flood-like disaster, which requires both administrative preparedness and public cooperation.
