Chaos After E-Rickshaw Overturns on Dumka Main Road; Dilapidated Road Becomes a Cause of Accidents
BHAGALPUR: A grim reminder of the deteriorating state of road safety emerged on Thursday near the Bypass police station area on the Bhagalpur-Dumka main road. An e-rickshaw lost control and overturned, leading to chaos and a major traffic jam on the busy route. Fortunately, there were no reports of major casualties, but the incident has raised serious questions regarding the poor condition of the road and the adequacy of safety measures in the area.
An Eyewitness Account
According to eyewitnesses, the e-rickshaw driver was traveling along the Dumka route with passengers when the vehicle lost balance due to deep potholes near the Bypass police station and suddenly overturned. Local residents rushed to the scene to assist the victims. Upon receiving information, the local police also arrived at the spot. Together, the police and the villagers managed to move the e-rickshaw off the road, after which traffic was restored following significant effort. The Station House Officer (SHO) confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident.
Commuters Struggling with Crumbling Infrastructure
Local residents state that this is not the first time such an accident has occurred. This stretch of the bypass road has been in a dilapidated condition for a long time. Large potholes in the middle of the road often prove to be a "death trap" for smaller vehicles. During the rainy season, these potholes fill with water, making them nearly impossible to detect, which frequently leads to vehicles getting stuck and causing accidents.
Challenges of Encroachment and Traffic
The state of roads in Bhagalpur’s urban areas and near the bypass remains highly concerning. Encroachments have already narrowed the roads, and now, the poor surface quality has caused the traffic management system to collapse completely. While the administration and the Municipal Corporation have launched stringent campaigns like 'Operation Clean Road' to make the city encroachment-free, there is a visible lack of attention toward the repair of busy, outer-city routes like the bypass.
Demands for Administrative Improvement
Local residents and daily commuters have demanded that the District Administration and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) take the following actions:
Immediate Road Repair: The deep potholes near the Bypass police station must be filled as soon as possible.
Safety Signage: Warning boards should be installed at dangerous turns and pothole-prone areas.
Curbing Encroachment: Illegal occupations along the roadside must be removed to provide adequate space for traffic.
