Bihar Police Identifies Over 5,000 Suspected Mule Accounts Used in Cyber Fraud Transactions

Patna: Bihar Police has intensified its crackdown on cybercrime and identified more than 5,000 suspected mule accounts allegedly used to transfer money obtained through cyber fraud. Police suspect that these bank accounts may have been used to move fraudulent funds from one account to another or to conceal the source of the money.

According to the information available, the highest number of suspected mule accounts has been identified in the Patna and Champaran regions. More than 30 percent of the total suspected mule accounts identified in the state are reportedly located in these areas.

Patna has recorded the highest number, with 672 suspected mule accounts. It is followed by Motihari with 509 accounts and Bettiah with 454 accounts. Nalanda and Gaya are also among the top five districts in Bihar in terms of the number of suspected accounts.

What Is a Mule Account?

In cybercrime investigations, a mule account generally refers to a bank account used to receive, transfer or withdraw money obtained through illegal activities. In some cases, the account holder may not be directly involved in the cybercrime but may allow another person or group to use the account for suspicious transactions.

Account holders may sometimes be offered money or commissions in exchange for allowing their bank accounts to be used. In other cases, criminals may obtain access to accounts through fraudulent identities or other methods.

After cybercriminals obtain money from a victim, they may transfer it through multiple bank accounts. Moving the money through several layers can make it more difficult for investigators to trace the original source and identify the people behind the fraud.

This is why identifying mule accounts has become an important part of cybercrime investigations.

Patna Has 672 Suspected Accounts

Patna has emerged as the district with the highest number of suspected mule accounts in Bihar. A total of 672 such bank accounts have been identified in the capital.

Patna is Bihar's major administrative, economic and commercial center. Its large population and extensive banking and digital-payment activity make the city an important area for investigations into cybercrime-related financial transactions.

Following the identification of these accounts, investigators will need to examine their transaction records. By tracing suspicious transactions, authorities can try to determine where the money originated, which accounts received it and where it was subsequently transferred.

509 Accounts in Motihari and 454 in Bettiah

After Patna, Motihari has reported 509 suspected mule accounts, while Bettiah has 454. Both districts are part of the Champaran region, making the region particularly significant in the investigation of suspected financial networks linked to cybercrime.

The fact that more than 30 percent of the suspected mule accounts identified in Bihar are reportedly located in this broader area has increased the importance of financial monitoring in the region.

The number of suspected accounts in Motihari and Bettiah also indicates that investigations into cyber fraud cannot be limited to major cities. Monitoring banking activity and suspicious digital transactions at the district level has become equally important.

Nalanda and Gaya Also Among Top Five

Nalanda and Gaya are also among the top five districts in Bihar in terms of the number of suspected mule accounts.

However, investigators will need to determine how many of these accounts were actually used for cybercrime-related transactions. Merely being placed on a list of suspected accounts does not by itself establish criminal involvement. Detailed investigation and examination of transaction records will therefore be essential.

Understanding the Financial Network Behind Cyber Fraud

Cybercriminals frequently use digital payment systems and banking channels to transfer money obtained through fraud. After money is received from a victim, criminals may quickly transfer it to another account and then move it through several additional accounts.

This makes it difficult for investigators to trace the complete flow of funds.

Identifying mule accounts can help authorities understand this financial network. For example, if an account receives money from numerous unrelated individuals and then quickly transfers those funds to several other accounts, such transactions may warrant further investigation.

Police may also need to examine banking records, mobile numbers, digital identities and other available information to establish connections between different accounts.

Public Awareness Is Also Important

The growing number of cybercrime cases has made public awareness increasingly important. People should never provide their bank accounts, ATM cards, internet banking credentials, OTPs or other financial information to strangers.

In some cases, criminals may offer money or commissions to people willing to provide access to their bank accounts. However, if money obtained through cyber fraud passes through such an account, the account holder could also come under police scrutiny.

People should therefore be extremely careful before allowing anyone else to use their bank account. Sharing ATM cards, UPI details or internet banking information with unknown individuals can create serious financial and legal risks.

Police Face Challenge of Breaking the Financial Network

Cybercriminals are constantly changing their methods. While phone calls and fraudulent messages remain common tools, the rapid growth of online banking and digital payments has created additional channels through which criminals can transfer stolen money.

As a result, the police face a challenge beyond simply identifying and arresting fraudsters. They also need to dismantle the financial networks used to move fraudulent funds.

The identification of suspected mule accounts could be an important step in this direction.

The large number of suspected accounts found in Patna, Motihari and Bettiah makes these areas particularly important for further financial investigation. Nalanda and Gaya may also become important parts of the investigation because of their position among the top five districts.

Next Phase of Investigation

Following the identification of more than 5,000 suspected mule accounts, the next major step will be to examine the transactions associated with these accounts.

Investigators will need to determine how money obtained through cyber fraud entered these accounts and where it was subsequently transferred.

If links are established between multiple suspected accounts, investigators could potentially identify larger cybercrime networks. At the same time, cases in which legitimate account holders' accounts were misused should be examined separately to determine their actual involvement.

Overall, the identification of more than 5,000 suspected mule accounts in Bihar represents an important development in the fight against cybercrime. With 672 accounts identified in Patna, 509 in Motihari and 454 in Bettiah, the Champaran region has emerged as an important focus of the investigation.

The inclusion of Nalanda and Gaya among the top five districts indicates that suspicious financial transactions may extend across several parts of the state.

The next crucial step for Bihar Police will be to trace the transaction chains associated with these accounts and identify the people operating the financial networks. If investigators are able to establish clear links between the suspected accounts and cyber fraud cases, it could help authorities reach the criminals and block the channels being used to move stolen money.

For the public, the development is also an important warning: bank accounts, ATM cards, UPI credentials and other financial details should never be handed over to unknown individuals in exchange for money or commissions.
