Security System Questioned Again at Mayaganj Hospital; Extortion Attempt in Medicine Emergency Ward and Death Threat to Nurse

Bhagalpur: The security arrangements at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (Mayaganj Hospital) are under scrutiny once again. A shocking incident has been reported in the hospital’s Medicine Emergency Ward, where a person attempted to extort money from the relatives of a patient and, upon facing resistance, threatened to shoot the duty nurse. The incident has caused widespread panic on the hospital premises and sparked deep resentment among healthcare workers regarding their safety.

Details of the Incident

According to the information received, a patient was admitted to the Medicine Emergency Ward late Saturday night. During this time, an individual entered the ward and began demanding money from the patient's relatives under the guise of "treatment charges." When the nurse on duty intervened to stop this illegal extortion and asked the individual to leave the premises, the perpetrator became aggressive.

The accused not only used abusive language but also threatened the nurse, stating, "If you interfere in my work, I will shoot you." This death threat sent shockwaves of terror among the healthcare staff and patients present in the ward.

FIR Registered at Barari Police Station

Upon receiving news of the incident, the hospital administration was immediately alerted. The nurse promptly reported the event to her senior officials and the Hospital Superintendent. Given the gravity of the situation, the administration informed the police without delay. An FIR has been registered against the accused under the relevant sections at the Barari Police Station. The police have launched an investigation, and CCTV footage is being examined to identify the culprit.

Head of Department (HOD) Statement

The Head of the Medicine Department provided detailed information regarding the sequence of events. He confirmed that the nurse has submitted a formal written complaint (application) detailing the entire incident. The HOD stated, "This incident is extremely concerning. Such hooliganism will not be tolerated in a sensitive place like a hospital, where the primary purpose is to save lives. We have initiated legal proceedings based on the formal application submitted by the nurse."

Questioning Security Protocols

Despite the deployment of security personnel at Mayaganj Hospital, the fact that external elements could reach inside the ward and threaten healthcare workers exposes the flaws in the hospital's security framework. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, after which assurances were given to bolster security, but the situation on the ground remains largely unchanged.

Other hospital staff members remarked that if doctors and nurses are not safe within the hospital, it becomes impossible for them to treat patients. They have warned that if the culprits are not arrested soon and strict security measures are not implemented, they will be forced to launch a formal protest.

Administrative Stance

Police officials have assured that the matter is being investigated thoroughly, and the accused will be put behind bars soon. Meanwhile, the hospital administration has decided to implement stricter controls for ward access. The authorities have emphasized that the 'patient pass' system will be strictly enforced, and the entry of unauthorized individuals will be completely prohibited.

This incident highlights the negative mindset of certain segments of society toward healthcare services. Currently, a heavy police force has been deployed at the hospital, and the situation is being closely monitored.
