Army of Clouds Takes Over: Mercury Tumbles in 23 Cities, A 'Double Alert' for Heavy Rain and Lightning in 7 Districts Today

Deeply relieving weather news is emerging for the residents of Bihar. After reeling under the double whammy of scorching heat and intense humidity for several days, the arrival of moving clouds has turned the state's weather pleasant and comfortable. The maximum temperature across 23 major cities in Bihar recorded a decline, offering substantial relief to citizens from the blistering heatwave conditions.

However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has coupled this relief with a major warning. According to meteorologists, there is a strong probability of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and severe lightning strikes across seven specific districts today.

Over Which 7 Districts are Danger Clouds Hovering? (Rain & Lightning Alert)

The Patna Meteorological Centre has issued special guidelines and alerts for seven districts in Seemanchal and North-Eastern Bihar. Residents in these zones are strongly advised to exercise extra caution:

 'Orange Alert' for Heavy Rainfall:

Kishanganj and Purnea: Under the active influence of the monsoon trough line, these two districts are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.

'Yellow Alert' for Thunderstorms and Lightning:

Araria, Katihar, Madhepura, Saharsa, and Supaul: These five districts are under a warning for thunderclouds, severe lightning strikes, and gusty winds.

What Changed the Weather Mood? The Clash of Easterly and Westerly Winds

According to weather experts, a unique and highly interesting meteorological interaction is currently taking place in Bihar's atmosphere, sparking this sudden shift:

Trough Line Passing Through Motihari: At present, the axis of the monsoon trough is passing directly through Motihari in the state.

Collision of Winds: The northern districts of Bihar are under the influence of moisture-laden 'Easterly winds' arriving from the Bay of Bengal, while southern Bihar is being swept by dry 'Westerly winds' blowing from Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.

Formation of Thunderclouds: The capital city of Patna and its surrounding areas are witnessing the convergence of these two contrasting air masses. The interaction of high moisture levels with daytime heating is leading to the localized development of dense thunderclouds, resulting in sudden wind storms and scattered rain.

Muzaffarpur and North Bihar Must Wait Longer for Core Monsoon Rains!

While the Seemanchal districts are on high alert for heavy downpours, farmers in the central pockets of North Bihar—including Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Samastipur, and Sitamarhi—will have to wait a little longer for the main monsoon spell.

According to Dr. Sattar, Nodal Officer at the Grameen Krishi Mausam Sewa (Pusa):

"The monsoon system arriving from the Bay of Bengal weakened slightly upon entering Bihar. Concurrently, the South-West monsoon has lost its momentum over Eastern UP. Consequently, the probability of heavy rainfall in Muzaffarpur and its neighboring districts over the next 4 days is only 20 to 25 percent. However, localized 'scattered rain' and strong gusty winds reaching up to 50 km/h will continue. The monsoon is expected to regain its rhythm after July 2."

Meteorological Department's Special Advisory: How to Avoid Lightning

Given that lightning strikes claim numerous lives in rural belts every year, the administration has rolled out vital safety guidelines, especially for farmers and field laborers:

Avoid Open Fields: If you hear thunder, immediately clear out of open fields, farms, or waterlogged areas.

Never Take Shelter Under Trees: Lightning strikes isolated tall trees more frequently; never make the mistake of hiding underneath them during bad weather.

Seek Concrete Shelter: Move away from iron poles, electrical wiring, and high-rise towers, and take shelter inside a sturdy, concrete building.

This playful movement of clouds has brought much-needed relief from the blistering sun for the people of Bihar, but the dangers of humidity and lightning strikes are far from over. If you reside in any of the seven affected districts, keep a close watch on the shifting weather conditions, prioritize safety, and remain indoors during active thunderstorms!
