Anti-Erosion Work Worth ₹100 Crore Underway at Ismailpur-Gopalpur Bindtoli
Bhagalpur/Naugachia: To mitigate the fury of the Ganga and the recurring devastation of annual floods, work is being carried out on a war footing on the Ismailpur-Gopalpur Bindtoli embankment in Bhagalpur district. The Water Resources Department is executing flood protection and anti-erosion works here with a massive budget of approximately ₹100 crore. Having learned from the cracks and erosion that plagued the embankment in previous years, the administration is in no mood to take any risks this time.
A New Security Strategy: The 7.1 KM 'Channel'
To strengthen the embankment, the department has adopted a new strategy. To reduce the pressure caused by the rising water levels of the Ganga on the embankment, the department has completed the construction of a 7.1-kilometer-long channel. This project was finished in a record time of just 90 days. Engineers believe this channel will divert the flow of the Ganga away from the main embankment, significantly reducing the pressure on the spurs and the structure itself.
District Magistrate’s Strict Oversight: "No Compromise on Quality"
Recently, Bhagalpur District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey conducted a surprise inspection of the embankment. She meticulously examined the ongoing work from Spur No. 7 to Spur No. 9. During the inspection, the DM strictly instructed the engineers of the Water Resources Department that if any irregularity is found in the quality of work, stern action will be taken against everyone, from the contractors to the departmental officers.
She has made it clear that no one will be allowed to repeat past mistakes. The department has been directed to ensure that all work is completed according to specified technical standards, keeping in mind the potential flood pressure during the monsoon.
Lessons from Past Disasters and Current Situation
Last year (2024), a section of the Bindtoli embankment was washed away due to severe erosion by the Ganga, which severed connections to several villages and displaced hundreds of people. Learning from the damage sustained then, the department has utilized 'Boulder Crating' and 'Geo-bags' as a security shield this year. The primary objective of this ₹100 crore project is not only to save the embankment but also to secure dozens of villages in the Gopalpur and Ismailpur blocks.
Monsoons and Challenges
Currently, the water level of the Ganga is being monitored. A team of engineers is keeping a 24/7 vigil on the embankment. Executive Engineer of the department, Er. Gautam Kumar, stated that the work is being constantly monitored, and an adequate stock of sandbags and other flood-prevention materials has been kept ready to handle any emergency.
Hope and Skepticism Among Locals
Villagers living along the embankment are looking at this construction work with a glimmer of hope. The villagers say, "The fear of floods makes us homeless every year. The government has spent a huge budget this time; we hope this security shield will keep us safe this time." However, due to previous experiences, there is still an underlying fear among the people, which only the strength of the embankment can dispel.
The works being carried out at the Ismailpur-Gopalpur Bindtoli embankment form the backbone of Bhagalpur's flood protection system. Only time will tell how prepared this ₹100 crore project is to withstand the pressure of the upcoming monsoon months. The administration claims that this time, the 'Great Shield of Security' is stronger and more technologically advanced than ever before.
