Angry Protest by Villagers Following Road Accident; Road Blocked with Bamboo Poles
Pirpainti (Bhagalpur): A massive uproar was witnessed in the Pirpainti block of Bhagalpur district this morning following a tragic road accident. In protest against the incident, angry villagers blocked the main road using bamboo poles. Due to this blockade, traffic came to a complete standstill from the early hours, resulting in long queues of vehicles and causing significant hardship to commuters under the intense heat.
Cause of the Incident and Villagers' Outrage
According to the information received, the incident occurred this morning. It is reported that a local resident was critically injured after being hit by a speeding vehicle. Following this incident, the local residents' anger boiled over. The villagers allege that minor and major accidents occur frequently on this road, yet the administration has failed to take any concrete measures for safety. To express their resentment and draw the administration's attention, the villagers planted bamboo poles in the middle of the road and completely halted traffic.
Major Demands and Protest
The protesting villagers raised slogans against the administration. They stated that they would not remove the bamboo poles until responsible officials arrived on the spot and provided a written assurance regarding concrete safety measures. The villagers' primary demands are as follows:
Speed Control: Immediate installation of speed breakers and caution signage in accident-prone areas.
Intensive Patrols: Increased police patrolling on main roads to curb reckless driving.
Road Repairs: Filling of potholes on the road, which are often the cause of accidents.
Compensation and Justice: Appropriate compensation for the victim's family and strict legal action against the driver of the offending vehicle.
Public Life Disrupted for Hours
Due to the road blockade, people, including school children, ambulances, and those traveling for urgent work, faced significant difficulties. The blockade was so effective that even two-wheelers were unable to pass through. Upon receiving information, local police and administrative officials arrived at the scene. Initially, the villagers were so enraged that the police had to work hard to bring the situation under control.
Administration's Assurance and Normalization of Traffic
The Pirpainti police station engaged in talks with the villagers to pacify them. The police assured the residents that their safety-related demands would be conveyed to senior officials and that special surveillance would be maintained in the area to prevent future accidents. After the administration provided concrete assurances regarding road safety, the protesting villagers removed the bamboo poles, after which traffic gradually began to return to normal.
This incident raises a major question about the poor management of road safety in the region. The villagers are now firm in their stance that if the administration does not act on its promises, they will be forced to launch a more intense protest. Currently, there is peace in the area, and police forces remain deployed.
