A Promise of Development or a Deception: Villagers' Anger Erupts Over Incomplete Road Project in Patarghat, Protest Staged

Patarghat: The main road connecting Lakshmipur to Tilathi in the Patarghat block of Saharsa district, which was once considered the lifeline of the region, is now in a dilapidated state. Due to the poor condition of the road and the collapse of a bridge on the main route, traffic has been completely disrupted. Protesting against this negligence, angry villagers took to the streets on Saturday, staging a strong demonstration and raising slogans against the administration.

A Project Worth 368.67 Lakhs: Exists on Paper, Not on the Ground

According to the villagers, a substantial amount of approximately 368.67 lakh rupees was sanctioned by the government for the reconstruction of this vital road from Lakshmipur to Tilathi. The objective of this project was to improve connectivity in the region. Under the contract signed between the contracting agency and departmental officials, the work on this road was to be completed by May 18, 2026, at any cost.

Today, even though the deadline has long passed, a large portion of the road remains incomplete. There are potholes in some places and clouds of dust in others, and most dangerously, a bridge collapsed in the middle of the road, inviting a major accident.

Scene of the Protest: "No Road, No Vote"

Since Saturday morning, dozens of villagers from Lakshmipur and Tilathi gathered on the main road with banners and posters. The protesters stated that not only is the construction work being delayed, but the quality of materials being used is extremely substandard.

The protesters alleged that:

Substandard Materials: Stones and sand contrary to the standards are being used in the road construction, causing the newly built road to crumble within days.

Middleman Culture: The work has been left incomplete due to collusion between the department and the contractor.

Administrative Silence: Villagers have pleaded multiple times with local representatives and the departmental Junior Engineer (JE), but each time, they received nothing but assurances.

Bridge Collapse: Traveling Under the Shadow of Death

There is an old bridge on this route that collapsed during the construction process itself. Villagers say that this bridge has been in a dilapidated state for the past few months, but no one has bothered to repair it. In the darkness of the night, motorists are unaware of this collapsed bridge, often leading to minor accidents. If it is not repaired in time, it could cause a major tragedy.

Negligence by Administration and Contractor

When asked about the reason for the delay in construction, no responsible official is willing to provide a satisfactory answer. Common citizens of Patarghat say that the failure to complete this project, worth more than 3.68 crores, is affecting their trade. For school children, patients, and daily commuters, covering a distance of 5 kilometers has become as difficult as climbing a mountain.

Demands of the Villagers

During the protest, the villagers placed their demands firmly before the administration:

Immediate Review of Work: The district administration should investigate this road project immediately and resume the incomplete work at once.

Action Against the Contractor: The construction agency that failed to complete the work even after the deadline passed should be blacklisted and fined.

Bridge Repair: The collapsed bridge should be repaired without delay to prevent loss of life.

Quality Audit: An independent agency should conduct an impartial investigation into the materials used for the road construction.

The Path Forward: Agitation and Warning

The villagers leading the protest have warned that if the road construction work does not gain momentum and the collapsed bridge is not repaired within the next 15 days, they will start an indefinite sit-in at the Patarghat block office. They have made it clear that empty promises will no longer suffice; they want development on the ground.

This road project in Patarghat is not just a matter of concrete and tar; it is also a test of public trust. Failure to complete the work within the deadline reflects the failure of the government machinery. It is the responsibility of the administration to remove the obstacles standing in the way of development today in the form of the road's condition.

Now, it remains to be seen when the administration wakes up from its slumber and when this road becomes accessible to the people of Patarghat. Currently, there is immense anger among the people of the region, and pressure on the local administration to take appropriate action has increased.
