A New Revolution in Darbhanga’s Agricultural Landscape: Brainstorming on Makhana and Horticulture Development Under the Chairmanship of MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur
Darbhanga: A high-level meeting was organized in Darbhanga with the objective of modernizing the horticulture and Makhana sectors—which have become synonymous with Mithilanchal—and giving them a new global identity. The meeting, chaired by MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur, was attended by agricultural scientists, administrative officials, and progressive farmers. The primary focus of the meeting remained on organizing Makhana production and integrating 'hi-tech' technology into horticulture.
Agricultural Development: Key Agenda of the Meeting
In his address, MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur clarified that Darbhanga does not lack natural resources, but due to a lack of technology, farmers are still limited to traditional farming. The meeting held detailed discussions on the following points:
Network of Hi-Tech Nurseries: Emphasis was placed on establishing 'hi-tech nurseries' equipped with scientific methods across the entire district so that farmers can easily access high-quality fruit and vegetable saplings.
Expansion of Drip Irrigation: Strategies were formulated to make the drip irrigation system mandatory under 'Per Drop More Crop' to prevent water wastage and increase production.
Makhana Processing Units: Priority was given to establishing local processing units for value addition, rather than exporting raw Makhana material.
Innovation Training Programs: It was decided to conduct regular training sessions to teach farmers the nuances of modern farming and digital marketing.
Makhana: 'The Gold of Mithila' and Its Challenges
The meeting featured a special discussion on the Makhana industry. Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur stated that Makhana is not just a food item, but the 'gold' of Mithila's economy. For its development:
Scientific Farming: Moving beyond traditional pond-based farming, technologies for growing Makhana as a 'superfood' in tanks and ponds must be brought to the farmers.
Branding and Marketing: Packaging and quality standards will be set to establish 'Mithila Makhana' as a premium brand in the international market.
Benefits of GI Tag: Since receiving the GI tag, demand for it has increased worldwide; therefore, increasing production capacity is our priority.
Horticulture Mission and Farmers' Prosperity
The meeting discussed bringing plans under the 'Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture' (MIDH) to the ground level to expand the horticulture sector. The MP stated that the soil of Darbhanga is highly fertile for the production of fruits like mango, litchi, and banana.
Cluster-Based Farming: Different areas will be developed as specific fruit clusters to facilitate easier exports.
Cold Storage Facilities: To prevent the spoilage of horticultural crops, emphasis was placed on building small and medium cold storages at the block level.
Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur’s Vision: Self-Reliant Farmers
Addressing the meeting, the MP said, "My vision is that the farmers of Darbhanga should not just be producers, but also entrepreneurs. When our Makhana producers do their own packaging and marketing, that is when a true economic revolution will occur."
He instructed administrative officials to ensure that there are no obstacles in delivering the benefits of agricultural welfare schemes run by the Central Government to the farmers at the grassroots level.
Experts' Opinion: A Blend of Technology and Tradition
Agricultural scientists emphasized at the meeting that in this era of climate change, we must adopt 'smart farming.' Drip irrigation not only saves water but also reduces fertilizer consumption by up to 30%, which lowers costs and increases profits.
This meeting, chaired by MP Dr. Gopal Ji Thakur, acts as a roadmap for farmers. If these plans are implemented honestly, then in the coming time, Darbhanga will not only become a hub for Makhana but will also emerge as a model in the field of horticulture.
