74,800 Cubic Feet of Soil Excavated from Proposed Degree College Land, FIR Registered
Darbhanga (Singhwara): A serious case of illegal mining has come to light on the land proposed for a Degree College in Sanhpur, under the Singhwara block of the district. The illegal extraction of soil by mining mafias after digging up government land has raised questions about the administrative functioning. Taking cognizance of this matter, the local administration has registered an FIR and intensified the investigation process.
Illegal Mining: A Major Loss
According to the ground measurement conducted by the investigation team, approximately 74,800 cubic feet of soil has been stolen from the site through this illegal mining. This is not merely an excavation of land, but an attempt to weaken the foundation of the government project under which the construction of a Degree College was proposed in Sanhpur.
Key points of the loss caused by illegal mining:
Environmental Imbalance: Large-scale excavation without permission has had an adverse effect on the local ground level and the environment.
Loss of Government Revenue: There has been a direct loss of royalties and fees that the state government should have received from the mining.
Obstacle in Development Work: Additional government expenditure will now be required to level the land for the construction of the proposed Degree College, which will inevitably lead to delays in development work.
Administrative Action and FIR
Upon receiving the information, the local Circle Officer (CO) and the police force inspected the site. Initial investigations revealed that the mining mafias had systematically extracted the soil using heavy machinery (JCB).
FIR: The police have registered a case against the concerned mining mafias and those involved under the relevant sections of the law.
Scope of Investigation: The police are now investigating which vehicles were used to transport such a large quantity of soil and to which locations the soil was supplied.
Stance of Administrative Officials
The Circle Officer of Singhwara stated that protecting government property is the department's priority. He said, "The mining mafia will not be spared at any cost. We have not only registered an FIR but have also started the process of identifying the vehicles involved in transporting the illegal soil."
Local residents allege that this game did not happen overnight but had been going on for several days. Taking advantage of administrative laxity, the mafia had turned the proposed college land into their own 'soil bank'.
The Growing Network of Soil Mining Mafias
This is not the first time reports of illegal mining have surfaced in the Singhwara area. Even before this, reports of the illegal trade of soil and sand have been emerging from various circles.
Confidence of the Mafia: Due to the loose grip of the administration, the morale of the mining mafia has increased.
Misuse of Resources: Targeting land meant for proposed development projects shows that the mafia has no fear of the administration.
The Path Forward: How will Illegal Mining Stop?
This entire incident has made it clear that merely registering an FIR is not enough. The following steps are necessary to curb illegal mining:
Intensive Patrolling: A joint team of the revenue and police departments should conduct regular patrolling in areas where government development projects are proposed.
CCTV Surveillance: Temporary CCTV cameras can be installed to monitor important government lands.
Public Participation: Local people should also be made aware that if such activities occur on government land in their vicinity, they should immediately inform the administration.
The illegal mining of 74,800 cubic feet of soil from the land proposed for a Degree College in Sanhpur is not only a criminal act but also a major obstacle to the educational development of the region. The administration must ensure the strictest possible punishment in this case so that no mafia dares to eye land meant for government projects in the future.
The police investigation into this matter is currently ongoing, and it is expected that all the main accused will be behind bars soon.
