₹531.6 Crore Additional Two-Lane Bridge Over the Ganga Under Progress; Government Also Shares Key Update on Buxar–Bhagalpur Expressway
Buxar: During the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Central Government shared significant updates in the Lok Sabha regarding two major road infrastructure projects for Bihar's Buxar district. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Jairam Gadkari informed the House that work is progressing on both the Buxar–Bhagalpur Expressway and the additional two-lane bridge over the Ganga River at Buxar. Once completed, these projects are expected to improve road connectivity, reduce travel time, and accelerate economic development across Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The information was provided in response to a starred question raised by Members of Parliament Rajesh Ranjan and Rampreet Mandal. The minister presented detailed updates on the current status, cost, and construction progress of both projects.
Additional Ganga Bridge Worth ₹531.6 Crore Moving Ahead
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the additional two-lane bridge over the Ganga River at Buxar, announced in the Union Budget 2024–25, is making steady progress. The bridge will serve as a vital transport link connecting the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
According to the government, the bridge will have a total length of 3.3 kilometres, with an approved project cost of ₹531.6 crore. The project is aimed at easing traffic congestion on the existing bridge, ensuring safer transportation, and strengthening trade and connectivity between the two neighbouring states.
The minister stated that construction is progressing in different phases, and the concerned agencies have been instructed to complete the project within the stipulated timeline.
Existing Bridge to Get Relief from Heavy Traffic
At present, the existing bridge over the Ganga in Buxar experiences heavy traffic, especially during festivals, the agricultural season, and other peak travel periods. Long traffic jams have become a common occurrence.
The new additional bridge is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve traffic flow, and provide safer and faster travel for commuters. Experts believe that the project will also facilitate smoother movement of freight vehicles, lowering transportation costs and boosting commercial activities in the region.
Government Continues Focus on the Buxar–Bhagalpur Expressway
The Union Minister also updated Parliament on the status of the Buxar–Bhagalpur Expressway, describing it as a major initiative to connect western and eastern Bihar through a modern high-speed road network.
Once completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Buxar, Arrah, Patna, Mokama, Begusarai, Khagaria, Munger, and Bhagalpur. The project is also expected to encourage industrial development, improve transportation of agricultural produce, and attract new investments across the state.
The government clarified that technical, administrative, and other project-related processes are being carried out continuously to ensure the project moves forward as quickly as possible.
Major Boost to the Regional Economy
Infrastructure experts believe that strong road connectivity plays a crucial role in regional economic development. The new bridge and the proposed expressway are expected to create fresh opportunities in industries, trade, tourism, and logistics across the region.
